Yep they ran out of money and sold the core of their team without replacements. Namely, Milner, Barry, Young and Downing. They were spending around 90% of their income on wages with big debts over 100 million. Selling was inevitable.

Looking on the bright side for Villa fans, at least when they get relegated Levy will be happy to give them £10M + Wanyama for that Grealish fellow (y).

All Villa fans regarding the penalty. They were responding to Dean Smith who launched a furious VAR blast - but Aston Villa fans disagreed with him:

@Razor_Sharper: Grasping at straws. It was a penalty.

@Villandrew: It was clear and obvious. He clearly never got the ball , obviously it’s a penalty

@SteveSomewhere: Looked fairly obvious to me

@Moorski7: No From the referees angle it was hard to see but VAR after about 3 mins viewed it numerous times & appear to have got Engels playing the man first

@ozonestu: No disagree it was clear and obvious after I’ve seen a replay VAR did actually get that one right IMO sadly

@anonimasu76: Naive and childish defending the entire game. Going forward we looked exciting.

@EJ_AVFC: Was a penalty. End of discussion.

@Cmoverdose: It was a clear penalty and although we played well at times our defence is a shambles, forever getting opened up. I certainly wouldn't call it a good performance

@Oli02926321: Can’t keep blaming VAR we all know it’s pants. As for the penalty it clearly was a foul annoyingly to say. Absolutely gutted we didn’t win.

@tovester2: But it was a penalty and obvious after seeing it once from the front angle..

@DickieBaird: Clearly a pen. Let's not overlook defensive mistakes by using VAR as an excuse, or we won't improve

Maybe it’s because they are resigned to going down, but they seem to have a far more reasonable mindset than a lot of fans. I’m sure if that was against us we’d have a fair few on SC arguing a conspiracy :D.

Dean Smith made a bit of a prat of himself in his MoTD interview, claiming it was in no way a penalty just because none of their fans at the ground thought it was a penalty.
After seeing the replay I'm not sure how anyone can argue otherwise.
This is exactly the sort of thing that VAR should be used for...the ref missed it and was corrected.

Perfect use of VAR (imo), from the camera angle I saw (and the ref's view was similar to mine) it looked a good challenge, only once I saw the replay was it obviously a penalty

Jesus wept! By that logic, every touch if the ball by a player at Goodison Park should be a foul as the fans boo and react all the time

FFS! No wonder he's a shite ref

tbf In my experience lurking on villa forums they always have. Yes they can rate themselves a bit better than they are but generally they don't get too hyperbolic post games.

Here's a Google translate from one of their forums

"Don't make yourself hot. Upa is better locked there than in the second leg.
We can easily play there because we are not favorites. Tottenham has to deliver.
I'm very relaxed there"

"I drive to London with great skepticism due to the problems in defense and in central midfield, but otherwise I'm extremely looking forward to the trip"

"Our defense also worries me a bit, normally the storm would have to straighten it out, but Timo is currently uninhibited"

I went on one site but all the talk was about tickets and travel arrangements. Very little about the game. A couple were pleased with Kane and Sissoko being out as they have a couple defenders missing apparently.
