What's new

What have we got to be excited about?

Unless we can tempt de Boer away, if we get a new manager they'll either cost a bomb and/or they'll be massively underwhelming. So when we don't give them enough time, or when Levy intrudes (I don't buy how so many managers simply "fall out" with him like it's their fault), we can go through all of this again in about 18 months. By which time, we might be irretrievably behind the top four in terms of both players & funds.

We look, to put it mildly, completely and utterly fucked.

At least we tried to play some football, it was obviously 2nd choice team for Tim par Hugo and defenders (high tempo all game -> switch players midfield and up front for next game if possible), we had no proper options to counter Fat Sam ball (Capoue and Vlad as only options, at least against Pool AVB had choice of not playing high line).

I'm excited with the prospect that next month we can attempt to off load Sigurdsson, Holtby, Naughton, Defoe, Chadli and Lennon .
Naughton and Defoe yes, but there are good players inside the rest of them, it's just about finding a manager and a system to get it out.

- Have been playing boring, defensive minded football until now. whoever we get in as manager will certainly have us playing more exciting football in comparison. Even today, with the loss, was a breath of fresh air imo compared to boring football AVB had us playing.
- Many players haven't hit form yet or haven't gotten enough playing time. Soldado, Eriksen, Lamela, Chadli are the big ones. Adebayor is another.
- Squad has lots of talented players who were successful at their previous clubs. They've got skill hidden in them somewhere.
- New stadium means Levy is just as desperate as the fans are to win now, even if its not for the same reasons. (successful team = more sponsorships and investors in new stadium)
- We should be a very appealing destination for a potential manager. Have good squad + chairman who wants to put out a winning team.
- Still have Europa league going for us. If we get our shit together we could still win it all.

I can't believe all the negativity treating things like its the end of the world that we lost in the cup.

Of course it's disappointing, especially to an under strength West Ham, but we've temporarily appointed Tim Sherwood, not Jesus Christ - don't expect a miracle after two training sessions!

Who can really say that the beginning wasn't exciting - seeing a faster pace, seeing Adebayor up for it - having Lennon AND Townsend running at defenders. There was a noticeable difference in the play and we really should have finished them off early on.

Perhaps they took the foot off the gas after the goal, and then after the substitutions our defensive frailites became apparent, but it is a makeshift back 4, even Dawson would have been useful today.

Some positives:
  1. Adebayor back, and looking hungry.
  2. More pace from the team - they looked dangerous at the start
  3. We have defensive players to come back soon, hopefully including Benni
  4. Soldado could thrive with the service like today
  5. This was only the capital cup - we are still in the Europa and league is more important
  6. We are only 5pts off 4th place and still more than half the season to go.
  7. There is still time for the interim team to find a balance.
  8. If we'd won convincingly, it might have given a false sense of security, there is plenty of work to do still.

What were you expecting? The first game with a caretaker manager? At least wait until we get a new manager and he has time to put his stamp on the team before slitting your wrists.

This is true. Still just sitting back and looking at what we've become this season in comparison to the last 3-4 years, it's shocking. I know statistically and where we stand in the league may say different but from what we're seeing on the pitch, it's just a staggering downfall IMO.

I've said it before and this is no hatred dig at AVB or anything, he tried something, and it didn't really work out but I really feel whoever takes over is going to have to undo the damage that he's brought upon the play of our football.

I don't know how appealing working with Levy is. Especially not when he fires the manager, and promotes his good mate to be the new manager.

Tim clearly intents to play with more tempo and urgency and thus he had to prioritise between tonight and PL. He chose PL so at least club believes there is still something to gain from the league.

Did he prioritise? or did he play the best team/ formation he thought he had?
I hope he has prioritised, as if he thinks that is his best team/ formation we may have some tougher weeks ahead

That was High Tempo rubbish. We didn't build up play, we didn't pass, we didn't create at all. Running at high speed end to end, crossing the ball in hope of getting it to a player in the same team is not creating chances and its not exciting. There was no method it was mindless end to end guff. I was bored.

I thought Sherwood deserved a chance hes been thrown in at the deep end and to be fair to him hes stepped up to the plate to give it a shot. But personally I think he bottled it and he looked out of his depth.

If I never saw us play that style again I wouldn't miss it.

Football has evolved from the old 442 with attacking wingers coming in with crosses to your strikers...

That was proved today...

The quicker we understand that the better.
