I didn’t bother applying for Marseille because I assumed the points would be too high but that ended up being pretty low.

Suspect this will be the same.
I agree, I expect you’re looking at low- mid 100’s for three of the four with Rangers probably mid 200’s.

Only two teams got tougher opponents than us according to the UEFA coefficient ratings.

Not a daunting draw, can’t really argue with the 4 home games, all winnable.
We’ll be big favourites for Ferencvaros and Hoffenhiem.
Rangers and Galatasary all depends how we handle the atmosphere.

Win all our home games and beat Ferencvaros and I’d imagine that’s us through anyway.

We shouldn't really fear anyone in this tournament tbh, sure there are some decent sides and no 'easy' games but we should aim to win every game which we play.

Thoughts on the new format?

I think it is interesting but personally didn't think there was anything wrong with the mini groups and then to a knockout, seems like most things these days that they've overcomplicated it a bit and changed it for changes sake.

Just my thoughts though, perhaps I'm just turning into a grumpy old man and 'they don't make em like they used to' kind of attitude.

I think judging the difficulty in this manner isn't accurate.

For example Athletic Bilbao and Nice only have a coefficient of 17.897 and 17.000 respectively, but would be tougher ties than say PAOK at 37.000, Alkmaar at 50.000 or Slavia Prague at 53.000 due to the fact they play in much tougher leagues, and have therefore had fewer opportunities qualifying for Europe.

They changed it because they think the extra 2 games will appease those still eyeing up a super league while adding a few more teams

Worth noting there isn’t much variance between any of those ‘Opponent Averages’ despite the individual coefficients ranging from 101.00 (Roma) to 4.30 (Elfsborg) - which is a good advert for the new format. Interesting that we face the two teams at either end of that range.

Oh really, was that part of the reason?

Yea it does seem more like a 'super league' type format, I didn't really think of it like that.

Will see how it goes I suppose.

It's quite a tough draw but everyone has some difficult matches. I guess that's down to the new format which I like the look of.

Initially I was against it and can understand the cynical view that it’s designed primarily to make UEFA more money.

That being said, a new format might be a positive. To play 8 unique teams in the initial phase of the tournament is quite refreshing, with more games against bigger teams (and also lesser teams).

The main concern is an already congested calendar is getting exacerbated. However, it will provide an opportunity for the wider squad to be utilised. So for teams like us with greater depth, we should be fine. Unless half our team gets decimated by injuries and suspensions like last year ha…

Could have been better and could have been worse. I really want to see us have a proper go at it this time.

When do we find out the dates of each team we play?
From this Football365 article:

The full fixture list with match dates and kick-off times will be announced on August 31, so to ensure no calendar clashes with teams in the Champions League and Conference League playing in the same cities.

Have they released the odds yet, would imagine us and United have to be favourites?
We are bookies favourite apparently, god knows why lol we've not made a EL Semi for about 40 years, never mind won the ting but sure come on Ange and the lads lets bring it home.

Nice no Sevilla and no CL drop down teams for once, both of those things should increase our chances :ROFLMAO:

We always seem to be the bookies favourite whenever we're in the Europa League.

Forget that, tell me the odds of us not winning it. That's where the real money is made

So we play 8 games as does everyone else but nobody plays everybody else so there's obviously some room for inequality in the competition. Who goes through to the next stage?

Top 8 go straight to round of 16, then 9-24 go to play-offs which determine the other 8.

I’m sure we’ll go out to some low rank team but hard not to be optimistic when I see the teams in the competition, over 2 legs I fancy our chances against them all.

not over 2 legs, 8 individual matches, 4 home, 4 away (unless i'm massively mistaken !).
