England undoubtedly have hugely talented players individually. This article suggests a historical lack of the collective - an English system or way of playing that other countries have that is familiar at the international level.

I think there is some merit here.

Kane could have done with Musiala providing some width on the wing. Or even just have Gordon play more than 1 minute in the tournament.

Will probably get negs for this but I’m relieved. I wasn’t really all in on England this time as in previous years, it irks me too much that there were no Spurs players and I didn’t want the boring “Tottenham = no trophies” troglodytes to have a stick to beat Spurs with if England did win it.

Anyway, hoping we have at least a couple players in the spine of the team when we go again for World Cup 2026, would especially love it if Archie Gray displaces Rice.

this is why I don't support England. In addition refuse to support Arsenal players and international football seems to attract the biggest scum bags.

just happy this is over and I can hate Saka and rice in peace.

He was a passenger tonight
This is part of the problem of making your CF the Captain, especially for the national team. CDs need to be scoring goals and giving the opposition’s defense problems. If they are not doing that then you bring in another CF to replace them but that’s difficult if the CF is your captain.

I don't believe you have the players with the technical ability comparable to the really top teams outside of a few players in the squad. I agree though that the manager needs to understand this and play to the team's strengths.

Mainoo to be fair to him did well but Rice was shown up badly to be a very limited player. Midfield is so incredibly important to any team and while you continue to play (and hugely talk up) limited players like Rice you are basically fucked.
Has anyone talked up Rice?
Most I've seen on here have been calling him nothing short of terrible.
He can only play in the direction he's facing and has massive lapses in concentration.
He has good moments but no consistency.

I think we do have the players, even if they are young like Wharton (I'd rather a midfield two of Wharton and Mainoo, instead of Rice) but we have a manager who is still pining for Kalvin fucking Phillips.

Southgate is a safety first manager and no matter how great you think he's been for us, he should have done so much better.
That's why we're not playing as well as we could be.

We can look back at the Southgate years as a positive step at least. The national team now have a togetherness, which I desperately hope stays with them. We’ve been to 2 finals which is a massive achievement in itself, and we seem like experts in Penalties all of a sudden.

We have a real talented group of players, with more coming through. That have a taste for it now. We just need that umph to get us over the line.

That showed we dont have the players. You are constantly laying the blame on Kane. When at least 5 other players have been bang average. Always been the same with England we think our players are better than they are. Name me the the last English Balon D'Or winner

There is never no oomph with Southgate as manager.

I'm not at all laying the blame on Kane, I just think he's been poor all tournament.
Same as I think Rice and Bellingham have.
Buts that's just an observation, not blame.

And football is a game of opinions, so if you think we don't have quality players and that's the reason we've failed again, then fine.
I personally do think we've got quality players but have a manager who's scared to play to their strengths, so that's where I'd be placing the blame.

This is what my beef is. We should look back on it that way. We have won junior tournaments In the last 5/10 years. We have players. Who are capable of winning tournaments. We have some of the best players in the world. And we get to the main stage. And shit the bed. If there is no continuity between the youth. And the main team. It’s all for nothing. And that been evidently clear over the last 5 years. Spain won it all at their peak. And continue to play there way through the ranks. Germans do the same. We try to shoehorn players in because they are a name. Been the same for 30 years. Time to rip this fucking rulebook up. It doesn’t work.

Let’s just hope he resigns.
I can’t watch another tournament with such a talented bunch of players wasted by someone who just wants to defend and hoof the ball forward.
Fuck getting to the final, we won 2 matches in 90 mins and played one good opposition.
Fucking joke.
Under Southgate we have lost every time we have come up against a quality side. The Netherlands who in this tournament were not very good without De Jong are the only top 10 team we’ve beaten. We struggle to win against teams 20 or 30+ places below us in the FIFA rankings so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Southgate’s misuse of the talent at his disposal verges on the criminal.

And to be fair, Rice is very good at what he does, it's just limited and sterile in the way Southgate sets England up.
Rice isn't a bad player at all, he's just limited and not as good as some say.
