I cant see this being true, but also I’m not totally against the idea. He obviously has leadership skills and would probably suit Jose’s system.

I prefer him to come in as a joint second fw with a younger more dynamic fw so we have a couple of different options but can’t see us signing two fw’s.

Soldado and Adebayour were not top quality the season Kane broke into the team - they scored only 3 league goals between them and we were desperate to upgrade them both.
still two proven internationals and i think we had another striker as well on our books too.
the point remains we shouldn't be aiming for a 1 season stop gap and hoping troy is good enough, we need to sign a top class back-up who can play instead of or with kane and then if troy does well on loan then we start to give him minutes gradually from the following season.

Who is a top class backup?

I wouldn't mind Troy Deeney. He will bring much more than goals, he is a leader has a certain attitude we could benefit from, when you look at the goals he scores (imo) he is a good finisher. We could also play off him and spread the work load for Kane

Troy Deeney isn't good enough for a relegated Watford and like 80% of you in this thread wouldn't mind it if we signed him? Wtf is going on? Did SC admins send out some awesome experimental narcotics to the members and mine got lost in the mail?

What has he successfully led? One promotion? I think we can cope without his leadership, to be honest. He is a bad footballer first and foremost, if we sign him it'll be a stark indication of our ambition as a club. He is turd.

Calum Wilson would be much better suited, has pace and is a better age and better style fit for our counter-attacks etc also he's a better footballer, Deeney is a flat track bully and suited watfords style to the ground, he is not the type or quality of player we need at this point.

Llorente was arguably a top class back-up, he was a former spain international, WC winner, CL experience and he did a fine job as a top-class back-up, ideally we just need someone who is a little younger with some pace who can also play with Harry not just instead of.

I’d personally love us to go for whoever loses the playoff final between Watkins and Mitrovic.
Much better ideas than Deeney!
Think Mitrovic would be a great fit if possible.

I’m torn between Watkins and Mitrovic. Mitrovic is a better number 9, but would not see as much game time in my opinion as our default would be Kane plus two wider options. Mitrovic might even suffer for the lack of game time. Watkins, however, has played as much as a wide player as he has a centre forward, so would get plenty of game time out wide. He could even emerge as first choice on the opposite side to Son, which would mean that we’d be starting three players who could play down the middle and bring in Lucas, Dele and Bergwijn in for any of them at any time, including for Kane, and shuffle things to still have an effective presence down the middle.

Love these other options. Here’s the issue, every other player mentioned in this thread (perhaps save Callum Wilson) is going to cost 25-30M+.

In my dreams, Uncle Joe is going to sell a painting and put the $ into the club to buy a striker, but it ain’t gonna happen.

so, if you want to spend 30M+ at striker, who else are you selling w/o replacing, or what other position are you not strengthening?

I don’t think anybody here “wants” Deeney, but if the choice is either Deeney or no cover for Kane, the decision is very simple and the guy would do a job. We don’t play beautiful football anymore. Occupy centerhalves and play the ball to Son/Lucas/Dele.

Whilst we maintain the mentality that we can only sign a striker who is happy to be back up to Kane, as opposed to competition for him then we have to look at players like Wilson and Deeney.

Those who are outraged by this rumour are the ones who think we can go and sign Lewandowski and tell him that he is here just to keep us ticking over when Kane breaks down.

So until we start looking at our squad differently, like City did when they brought Jesus in to challenge Aguero, rather than having Roque Santa Cruz or whoever it was they had when they just needed numbers, then this makes perfect sense.

I don't know a huge amount about Wilson, but with Deeney we would be bringing in someone who would be happy to play second fiddle but would also work their arse off in any minutes they were given, he would rattle defenders when thrown on when chasing a game, can chip in with goals when needed and would also be happy to be given a chance at a bigger club in the autumn of his career.

Agree, but would prefer Callum Wilson. Some will say he's not as good as Cavani though ;).

As has been said many times before on SC, it's probably not realistic to sign a top-class back-up for Kane. Talented strikers want to be the main no.9, not rot on the bench. Any striker we sign will either be a big gamble (e.g. we tried sign Martial two summers ago, while he was underachieving...that would have been a big risk at the time) or will be far more average than fans want.

Two proven internationals who were well off-form and we couldn't wait to be rid of. Ousting them in the starting XI would have been fairly equivalent to Parrott earning a place on the bench over Llorente, had we kept him on the books last season.

I'm fairly certain there wasn't another striker in the squad:
Pavlyuchenko and Saha left two years earlier.
Crouch and Gudjohnson had both been gone 3-4 years.
Janssen joined 2 years after Kane broke through.
