I've been thinking that there are only so many games that players can really get 100% "up" for, no matter how much they rationalise the need for intensity in every match.

Many of us think (including me) that it's actually more important for the future of the club to qualify again for the Champions League this season than it is to do well in it. But it seems to me that it must be impossible to get the players to share this view at a gut level. They all want to play in the CL: it's the pinnacle of club football. They're all naturally going to be much more "buzzed" about playing a CL qualifier or Tottenham's first home CL group match or at the San Siro, compared to Wigan or West Brom or Villa at home.

I think that's what causes "post-CL hangover" - not physical exhaustion, but the loss of intensity and mental focus.

I can't see what Redknapp can do to change this. And I think it is affecting our league form. Let's hope we prove it wrong this afternoon, at least for this week...

Yes , absolutely right . Wenger was saying that the prob with CL was the changing over to Prem and back to CL . The players ,many of whom are enjoying CL for the first time are clearly 'up for it' .

The come down when playing smaller Prem teams is not just the players . I reckon the buzz in here is lower too , fans are waiting for the next CL excitement. This attitude is all over our club and how we shake it off will determine our Prem progress .

Shame no King, glad Lennon is fit enough for the bench though, be nice to be able to introduce his pace later on. Hope Hudd has a good game from the back. Likely to be captain again I guess?

Pretty much the team I wanted if Ledley was out. Except I would have given Sandro a chance over Jenas.

Modric and Jenas in the centre seems soft..

Am glad Huddlestone is at centre back, would rather him there than Corluka.

I guess that with Villa playing just the one man up top having Hudd back there shouldn't be too bad.

Such a shame King hasn't made starting 11. Only bonus is that Agbonlahor isn't playng. Huddlestone should be able to cope with Heskey in terms of strength and height.

I keep trying to imagine how Sandro's going to get a game this season. It seems he's so far down the pecking order the only chance he's got is if there's a spate of injuries. As a DM he's not going to be played against the weaker teams, but equally against the stronger teams he's not going to be risked either.
