Not sure if it's been said yet, but you can be sure there is no coincidence that Romero doesn't have a fat new deal. He'll go for a massive fee next summer just in time for Dragusin to step in with Phillips and Vuskovic waiting in the wings. And we'll lose another one of our best players in the Kane, Bale, Modric, etc., etc. bracket

Romero is nowhere near Kane, Bale or Modric while playing for us. His global reputation comes from 2 x Copa América and World Cup wins. He has played well and also been an idiot at times for us.
Chasing round on Sunday. You don’t let 60plus goals in with the best centre half in the world.
No doubt he will go in the summer . Hope we use part of the fee for another good centre back and put the rest to a top class midfield or forward player.
His priority has definitely been Argentina over the years. Same for LoCelso.

True but I think the point was his value /sell on is excellent atm which means he is our best player currently in the same way Kane/Bale/Modric/Berbatov/Carrick were

Also, 1 really really good defender cannot stem the floodgates, as we saw with Rsol & King for long periods - tactics and midfield cover also play a part…

Not sure I agree with you.
I wouldnt agree his priority has been Argentina, hes made himself available plenty for us.
Yes he has had moments when he has lost his head, but that is more of a rarity these days.
In terms of ability, he is in my opinion up there with the very best centre backs in todays game.
Saliba, who I rate, would look worse in our system and style of play, whereas, Romero would look better in Arsenals.

Just a point on Ange putting Odobert straight into the team, and keeping him in v Newcastle.
There were other, more experienced players he could have used, but no, straight in. This is a player who has done ok for Burnley but hardly the second coming.
Has he done this to point out to Levy that he wanted Eze but he got Odobert. Play him and let people see how good he is . He’s not bad but nowhere near a player like Eze.
To me, Mikey Moore can give as much as Odobert at the moment .

That’s good of him to make himself available, we do actually pay his wages. Saliba is quicker, better in the air . I have always liked Romero but he is not at the Kane/Bale level for us . Nowhere near.
South American players cannot turn down Madrid or Barca. If they want him, he’s gone. Hopefully for a big wad of cash.

It’s not the first time that opinion has been put forward with owners buying players that managers don’t want. Did you think Odobert was worthy of going straight in. I think there is more evidence for Gray or Birdvall starting.

Odobert started because of the injuries to Richy and Solanke which meant that Son had to play as a striker. Ange clearly rates Odobert higher than Werner which is why he chose to play him. I don't think there is anything more to it than that.

Odobert was one of the best dribblers in Europe last season, going up against Premier League defenders too. Moore has a big career ahead of him but Odobert has a full PL season under his belt, he is far more ready right now.

If we do secure the minority investment I would expect absolutely zero change in how we operate in the transfer market. It's just ENIC / DL cashing out of their unrealised gains. Must be well annoying having several billion in pure profit sitting there but not being able to access it.

I know we have ITK suggesting he’d be open to the idea but personally I’d be rather surprised if Romero were to sign an extension at this point even if we offered him the money. He is going to be 27 next year, with the current state of the club and 2 years left on his deal i wouldn’t be overly surprised if he was waiting to see how the season plays out before committing his peak years to us. If we don’t get CL, which I think there is a reasonable chance we won’t, why would he want to stay? Realistically he is good enough to be playing for a team regularly challenging for titles.

I think what is more telling for me, if we are going along with POK’s train of thought re wages being further reduced, is that we haven’t yet offered (or triggered if there is the option to) Son an extension. He is after all the highest paid player at the club. Despite his age he is still our current most effective forward plus his profile from a marketing POV would make it almost a no brainer to give him at least a 1 or 2 year extension.

Maybe we do decided to extend it in the coming weeks/months but if we are really trying to decrease the wages as much as possible we are getting to a point where there are three players left who are on over 120k (Son, Maddison and Romero) and only one of them has their contract running out next summer and will also be turning 33.

Ether way I do think it’s fairly clear that something is on the horizon regarding a partial take over. There has been ITK and press reports suggesting as much for a while now. We’ve even had names of potential suitors make it to the press. If it does happens, and obviously nothing is guaranteed at this juncture, then I imagine it happens next year. These things do take time after all. Once it’s gone through then one would hope there will be more willingness to spend on both players and contracts. At least to a larger degree than we do currently.

the only logic for a partial takeover I can see is people cashing in on their investment. I can’t say having any value to the club.

everyone thinks rally heading in a good direction which needs some time with undervalued how clever our transfer has been because we want ready Mate showing new toys. Also the wage bill is dropping round everyone’s realise 300 grand a week is a huge problem when you need to get rid of a player.

This has grounded me a bit for now, but my big worry is if true that our wages are capped at 120k. How on earth are we going to attract any big names to come to us? We can keep picking up youngsters but we also need some more experienced players who have won trophies to show some leadership. Apart from Romero and Son I don’t really need see any leaders on that pitch. Son may retire in a year or two and Romero is pretty much gone next summer if we don’t win a trophy.

Son isn’t really a leader on the pitch. I could see Dragusin being one in the future
