I considered starting a thread last week but didn't because it was a brief mention. However, interesting quotes have come out, which @SargeantMeatCurtains will post below.

Meunier is one of two Belgium right backs that have been considered by Tottenham — Timothy Castagne of Atalanta being the other.

Timothy Castagne has admitted ‘the time has come’ to leave Atalanta and that ‘you can’t say no’ to Paris Saint-Germain or Tottenham Hotspur.

Both sides are in the market for full-backs this summer, so Castagne was asked about reports PSG and Tottenham were after him.

“I think the time has come to move on, but I won’t be disappointed if I stay in Bergamo,” the Belgium international told La Derniere Heure.

I’m very proud of this. It’s proof that hard work pays off. I hope it’s more than just simple interest from them.”

The 24-year-old is known to be an Arsenal fan, so how much would that weigh on a potential move to their arch-rivals?

“I was especially a fan when Thierry Henry played for them. Now I’m not so much.
“You have to be honest with yourself. When a team like PSG or Tottenham come knocking on your door, you can’t say ‘no’.”

Castagne has played 21 times this season, with two goals and two assists, but lost his starting place at the turn of the year.

Worth nothing that Castagne plays as a versatile wing back for Atalanta. Incredibly similar to the role Aurier plays. So that alone ticks Jose’s box.

But does this appeal to Don Levy? Castagne’s contract expires in 2021 so make of that what you will.

I thought Hans Hateboer was Atalanta’s first choice RB? Now he’s a good player!

  • Can't reject Spurs
  • Backhanded dunk on Arsenal
  • Can play attacking right back role but also defend

I'll ask those with the knowledge - how, if at all, does he compare to Meunier?

He plays on both the right and the left, correct? Decent option with only a year left on his contract, gives us much-needed squad depth behind Aurier and also buys us time to allow Sessegnon to develop, potentially out on loan.

Considering we’re reliant on Aurier for providing our width, Castagne is not known for his attacking capabilities. I would rather have two like for like full backs to reduce the need to chop and change our tactics just so we can cater for them.

Castagne is serviceable defensively, but it is impossible to predict a fullbacks attacking production/success in a new team when leaving Atalanta, because their wingbacks basically attack for the whole game and should be expected to contribute goals and assists with where they spend the majority of the game (much like serge has produced great attacking numbers this season in his advanced role). Granted, their LWB robin gosens is top class, and hateboer not too far behind on the right. I don’t think (rather don’t hope) we are playing this lopsided formation next season, and we transition to a 3 man midfield which I think is required in the prem these days to be successful and win titles vs the city’s and the liverpool’s, even if we still sit back and counter in the bigger games which is completely reasonable. However, even if we are, castagne isn’t an improvement on serge imo even if he would play the serge role. Youcef atal is the answer to that role imo if we continue to play the lopsided formation, with his athleticism and work rate/awareness. I’d much rather a cut-price deal for relegated max aarons or an ambitious move for Ricardo pereira or out-of-favor Joao cancelo. More realistic(?) might be Nelson semedo who has blossomed under setien at Barca. Regardless, athletic and productive full backs are required to be successful in the modern day game, so I would steer clear of wasting money on an average one like castagne. We need major upgrades at both LB AND RB, which are the biggest weaknesses in the squad, and I don’t think castagne is the answer.

He plays as a wingback for Atalanta. Might work better in a 4 as he is known to be a bit more defensively minded than Hateboer. It makes sense. Ideally we should be getting two right backs so I'll trust the club on this one.

Could we get Gomez as well? what a player he is.

In that case we'd basically be assuming that Sessegnon will never get a go at left back. Personally I liked the idea of Meunier, with his height & CB experience, because I could see him acting as equivalent to Davies on the left, allowing Sess to bomb on in the same way as Aurier. I suspect that's the type of player Jose's looking for, as I doubt Serge will be leaving. Quite like the idea of Ferguson personally, though might be too inexperienced for what Jose is looking for there.

At least we are being linked with fullbacks. Always a positive sign to be linked with players in positions we need to improve in as it means we are out there looking for players!

Better to get a HG option for that spot IMO, plenty of great youngsters out there, fullbacks are getting super important in modern football (replace those 2 from Liverpool with anyone else and they don't win CL last year) so not a filler spot anymore. But with our need for a second striker and DM and Levy's MO+Covid crisis I doubt we spend big on this position sadly.

I’m glad we’re being linked with right backs.

I’m also watching Southampton with a keen eye to see if KWP gets a run now after a positive performance v the scum, and if so, can he can muster enough form to convince that he could be an option for us next season.

If so, he may well be in the picture next season.

Castagne too slow for my liking.

I'd still be interested in Bogle. And Matty Cash @ Forest sounds interesting on account of high interception and tackle stats as well as goals and assists - both were discussed on the Extra Inch, apparently.

Going to watch Forest this afternoon to see how he plays.

I knew Ferguson wasn't playing but didn't realise he wasn't even training. He's joining Palace for peanuts on Jul 1.

Meunier isn’t a right sided version of Davies, he’s excellent going forward and both creates and scores goals.

Mourinho has already come out and said Sessegnon isn’t ready yet and we keep getting linked with both left and right backs.

Ferguson is another I would stay clear of as he’s also very raw and has been criticised for the poor defensive awareness. I would much rather go for Aarons’ as he’s already EPL ready.

Yea good point that hopefully Jose can coach sess into a LB then we’d not need to buy one, that or coach him into a top LW then that gives us another pacey wide Attacking option off the bench.

Think there was ITK about Aaron’s preference being arsenal or Chelsea and we have little chance? But if we can sign him I think he’d be ideal yea.

Like this link, firstly as the media links are all in our problem areas which suggests we are actively trying to fix our biggest areas of concern. Secondly because I do rate Castagne when budgets are going to be tight having an option to support us in two positions seems sensible.

However my preference would still be Aaron's even though I think the chances are slim.
