He may be too old now, especially for the PL but what I will say is letting go of Jan and bringing in Silva is a lot different to just keeping Jan. He would bring a fresh presence and mentality, and perhaps he is a defender more suited to a lower block.

If the financial outlay wasn't too great, and we can move on both Toby and Jan for a bit of a refresh, then I think i'd be for it. But those are big ifs. Toby has now got 3 years left and I can't see him being in a rush to leave any time soon.

Can't remember what game it was, but last time I saw Vertonghen play he looked loads better than he has recently. There was some sort of fitness issue at the start of the season when Poch left him out so maybe he's only recently got over that.

I've always adored Thiago Silva as a defender. Few players have played the game of a centre-back with the smoothness, smartness and in such aesthetically appealing style in the last 15 years. Unfortunately and realistically he's been going downhill for the last three years.

I rather give Jan two more years honestly. Looking at how Mourinho got Terry (with legs gone) playing very well in the 13-14 season in a medium-low block gives me confidence Jan could have one more good season in him.

He won't quite have the legs he had at 28, but just 'cause Jan's have gone at 33, doesn't mean his have yet at 35/36 (no idea if they have or not as haven't seen him recently or heard about it either way). Of course the danger is that they might at any moment, as we saw with Jan it can be a relatively sudden thing, but if Mourinho wants someone and pickings are slim, then he is probably a good idea as a stop-gap Jan replacement. After all, he is one of the best defenders of his generation.

Stating the obvious; we should have signed him ten years earlier and not at 36...

I wouldn’t be against this. Leadership✅ Experience✅ Role model✅
Add another leader in Hojbjerg and we start to look a lot stronger in key areas. It would give us excellent rotation options at the back, as Hojbjerg would in midfield.
New RB Dier Silva Davies/Sess

Toby Dier Silva

Hojbjerg
Ndombele LoCelso

Hojbjerg
Winks LoCelso

etc etc

Sorry but how is this anything other than an absolute no? Genuinely shouldn't even be considering it.
People sometimes see marquee name and free transfer and it skews the mental formula they apply to the value of a deal.

Why? Remember how effective Naybet was? Some times spending a bit on experience and leadership can be useful.

it’s clear we do lack leadership so it’s down to Kose to work out the best way of getting that on the pitch. If he feels Silva offers that, then why not?

Yeah we already have Toby in the experienced, slow CB category.

Would rather sign Dias and give Tanganga more chances, although aware that probably won't be possible re covid.

Both Jan and Toby are past it and in their prime where never as good as TS.

TS has had s relatively injury free career and IMO could be exactly what we need in defence for a season until we can spend proper money again.

Also Jan seems not bothered about signing a new deal and as much as I rate Tangana he is a few years away from being an established PL CB.

The sun are saying we want Gabriel from Lille, which makes much more sense than signing silva

He strolled the 5-0 game at left back against Burnley and played in a few games following that. I think it would be fair to say he was fine in all of the games where the team as a whole played okay and less so when the team wasn't playing well. Unsurprisingly!

We’ve no idea how he will cope in the fast paced EPL and for that reason it has to be a no. If we’re wanting an experienced versatile player then we should be enquiring about Fernandinho and City, he’s 35, 1 year left on his contract and he can play both CB and DM. Unlike Silva he’s played in the EPL for years and can still perform week in week out.

I get your point about Silva being both old and a risk, but I’m not sure I follow your suggestion of Fernandinho.
Yes, we know he can play in this league. But why would spend on a transfer fee, and wages for him? Remember, the only reason we are discussing Silva is because he’s available on a free. If he wasn’t, we wouldn’t be talking about him.
We could discuss Malang Sarr, 21 from Nice, who is available on a free, as an alternative.

Fernandinho? Simply never going to happen. Let’s keep it realistic

I think he'd be a positive influence on the squad, but I'm not sure how he fits in or how we could afford/justify his wages (unless he's willing to take a HUGE cut). I believe he's currently on circa £250k p.w. (roughly what Toby, Jan & Shanchez earn combined!) and according to reports he's after circa £175k p.w. from his new club.

Jan leaving on a free would cancel out Thiago Silva joining on a free, so his being a free agent doesn't really free up money for wages.

I'd find it slightly sickening to replace both Toby and Jan with Thiago Silva, without it even freeing up some of the wage budget for someone else. As I see it, we already need to add a couple of players to the squad irrespective of sales (fullback + backup striker), so it just doesn't add up to me.

We don't want versatile players, we need established world class experts at their positions IMO.

Now this is obviously going to be a difficult ask given our likely lack of transfer funds, so for me going for someone like TS makes sense, but i do acknowledge his age is an issue.

Last couple of times I've seen PSG on the box I'm pretty sure he was playing as a DM and he looked good at it. Maybe that's Jose's reason in checking him out.
