I've cleared this with A&C and Rob. I was told by someone that Jose has made enquiries about Thiago Silva and if he'd like to join us. That's as far as it could go, as we all know Levy may be reluctant to sign a 35 year old. But just thought I'd put it out there that Silva is under consideration.

This doesn't really make sense. We won't offer Jan a 2 year contract when he's just turned 33, so it seems highly unlikely we'd sign a 35 year old in the same position who'd likely command significantly higher wages.

I like the idea of bringing in some proven winners, but not 35 year olds.

Yeah we already have Toby in the experienced, slow CB category.

Would rather sign Dias and give Tanganga more chances, although aware that probably won't be possible re covid.

I think we all agree with that sentiment. Sucks because I bet theres a decent discount on Dias now, maybe he costs 50 mil instead of 75.

But idk how I feel about Silva. I guess it would be fine for depth but is he really much better than Toby, Dier, Sanchez at this point? I don't watch enough PSG to tell, nor would it be easy to figure out due to how poor the French league is.

Thanks Rob.

This person also mentioned that we have young defenders (which confused me as we have two very experienced ones) once I saw the starting line up last night, it struck me that maybe Jose is happy to let both Toby and Jan go in order to bring in Silva.

Maybe he doesn't see Toby and Jan as defenders who can play his system? To be fair, Jan isn't a deep defender and Toby is better on the front foot.

Have no idea about Silva. He's the type of character I think the team could really benefit from but I don't think I've ever really watched his performances on the pitch or know how he's been for PSG recently.

I do think we could do with characters like him and Coutinho though. They are the type of players that could come into the dressing room and have the other lads driven by it, improve the collective mentality.

Don’t hate it as a Jan replacement who can do a job as 4th choice for a season but if this deal is with a view to him starting then I won’t be elated to say the least.

If he's a free transfer and he's not after silly wages or a huge signing on fee, I think it would be worth a punt.

Mourinho likes to have one quick centre back and one powerhouse. His best examples are obviously Terry and Carvalho, then Pepe and Carvalho (who despite being 33/34 was superb as Madrid won the title and still quicker than most centre backs). Even Lucio and Walter Samuel at Inter fit the type.

At one point Thiago Silva was the fastest centre back going. He also plays at lcb. However, he turns 36 this coming September. If he still has most of that pace, then Dier or Sanchez as the aerial presence to his ground game could be a very complementary pairing, but I just can’t imagine it. Throw in that he’s injury prone and I struggle to imagine this transfer having the desired effect.

That said, if the plan was to have him but nurture Tanganga, who possesses a similar physical makeup albeit raw skill set, over a two season transitional period during which Tanganga gradually got more and more game time, I’d get it. Still not convinced of its viability but it would make sense.

The other question mark for me, is where does that leave us with the Belgian elephant in the room with 3 years left on what I imagine is a very lucrative deal?

give him a 1 or 2 year deal still decent player.

A lot can go wrong in 2 years with older players. Toby and Jan were imperious less than 2 years ago but have crashed spectacularly lately. I'm not a fan of short term fixes and Silva would probably command huge wages too. People say stuff like 'Tanganga would learn so much from Silva' as if he can't learn anything from Toby and Jan.

I can’t see it happening. At nearly 36, he’s better off in a slower league where he’ll probably be on decent wages anyway. We’ve already got two creaking centre backs- though Jan is probably off-, I can’t see us throwing wages at another

It depends if he’s creaking or not. Athletically he’s a different beast to them, more compact and at his quickest, rapid. It’s just a case of how much pace he’s lost.

If he’s got the ability to be a modern day Naybet to the likes of Sanchez, Foyth and Tanganga, then I’m all for it.

He’s older than Jan, but Jan looks increasingly passed it sadly. Different players go into decline at different stages of their career. I’ve no where Silva is on his career trajectory, but I cant see Vertonghen still being here next year either way.

They’re gonna be silly aren’t they.

Fine to sound him out, I suspect we do that to lots of players though.

The only way I see sense in signing him is if the manager thinks the player will be at the club as long as him because it’s doesn’t fit anyone else’s M.O. at the club
