I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the general concept of what you're saying, but I just think the idea of cameras and specialist lip readers zooming in on people's lips, trying to find traces of a word or a sound being made is like something out of George Orwell and it's not something I'm particularly comfortable with.

.

I dont disagree with that either. Sometimes there are necessary evils
But again its whether you trust the observers or not

I would err on the side of extreme caution under the circumstances I've described, and I'm no great believer in the 'Big Brother is watching us' theory.

Personally I don't have a problem using technology to catch people carrying out hate crimes. Those people are a much bigger problem to society than an invasion of privacy.

I agree. In our society in general, those people are the very cancer of humanity and I have absolutely no problem with any system which could be proven to eliminate them, but I just don't think anyone scanning and reading the lips of thousands of people at a football match, trying to identify anyone making a hissing noise is ever going to work effectively, given the tiny muscular movement of a person's lips which would be necessary to make that horrible noise.

You don't need a camera, you need to attend a game and take a microphone.

On match broadcasts they often 'layer' the fans chanting because it drowns out any profanity.

Attend a game, take a microphone, not a camera.

Daryl did you ever see Lord of the Flies?
I did, many years ago. I remember Piggy was killed.

Lord of the Flies is a 1954 novel by Nobel Prize–winning British author William Golding. The book focuses on a group of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. Themes include the tension between groupthink and individuality, between rational and emotional reactions, and between morality and immorality.

How come?

You can see what happens when people try and control themselves (in this case kids on an island) as opposed to an imperfect status quo like politicians or police forces etc
Pick your poison. Nothings perfect. I'll just take what we have and hope it gets a bit better or try to make it better if I could

But a microphone will only tell you that noises are being made, not who's making them, won't it?

Now there's a sentence that Orwell could sink his teeth into. :cautious: ;)

Anything with Baddiel's name attached to it immediately loses credibility - he's been chasing Spurs fans over this for almost 20 years, can't find a single article or interview where he mentions the selection of chants, the hissing or the blatant, loud anti-Semitic fans of his own club.

Have the conversation, consider the feelings and faith of others, use critical thought over the use of it and when/if it's appropriate, but don't lead with Baddiel.

I'm not Jewish, it's not my word to 'reclaim' and i don't get to decide if it's offensive or not just because i want to join in some singing.
This. It’s obviously offensive to lots of folks in the Jewish community so let’s wise up and just stop. Enough with the surveys

I’ve heard him mention his embarrassment of Chelsea fans on multiple occasions.
