Chelsea have to be the luckiest bunch of ***** going. Got a transfer ban, that has helped them amass a large transfer kitty, which they can now unleash in a decimated ongoing COVID transfer market and really maximise it.

They made money when they sold an expensive flop and thei best player. A transfer ban and an international pandemic later and the cards have fallen their way. Really good signings which really improve them. We must bring in a cute transfer operator or Daniel must driver for José or I fear we are in for a few years of relative mediocrity.

Anyone think we'll go back in for Grealish if Villa go down? Pretty obvious we couldn't afford him either way as we'll be priced out (answering my own question there) but Yanited seem to be focusing their attention elsewhere.

I honestly think we should just pile all our money in on a DM. God knows who, but not keen on strengthening our already strong attack. Right back is the only other area of concern I’d say.

'Only' €50 million too. Absolute steal and Chelsea making the most of the uncertainty with the market by committing funds early.

That's the initial, it could rise to £53m, still a good deal but only possible because they lucked out with Morata going.

I don't think it's luck, they've operated very shrewdly of late after Sarri came in as coach. They're also utilising their excellent academy. They will have always cheated their way to this position though, no matter how much they might claim to be self sustainable. This is only true because of the knock on effect of huge asset sales from the initial Abramovich investment.

However, their extensive investment in youth and clever use of loan system largely made that feasible, in that they were able to bring the likes of Tomori, James, Mount, Abraham etc back in to plug the gaps in their squad whilst they couldnt buy anyone, they were all improved after being loaned out to play competitive football. That isn’t so much luck.

Thats a bit off topic, but I do feel they manage their academy and development better. Admittedly, they plough huge resources into it, but from that list above, plus others either still there or already sold, it must pay back. It’s the use of loans to develop players where they benefit largely.

Given the current economic climate, I would definitely not be against targeting a couple of astute older players on free transfers, then add in some younger players with potential. No need for multiple big money signings, just addressing the balance of what we have to better suit what Jose wants would see us reap rewards.
I’m coming round to the idea of someone like Thiago Silva if his wages are realistic, winning mentality, offering a Naybet type influence to Sanchez, Tanganga etc, the way Naybet did for King and Dawson. We could get a mixed bag of free transfers and lesser costing punts and still come out better off, if we are smart.

CB - Silva, plus a younger CB like Sarr, Kouassi or Mbuyi-Muamba (from those linked) given Silva probably only gives us a season or so, so too Toby. All out of contract.

RB - Meunier as older head, with Ngakia or Ferguson as backup options, all out of contract.

DM - Either Florentino Luis on loan to buy, or Sanagare given Toulouse’s relegation may force a sale. Both athletic rangy DM’s capable of turning over the ball and playing intelligent passes.

AM/WF - Fraser or Willan as experienced options, with Eze the investment. Short and long term addressed.

CF - Dzyuba as the physical focal point of free is the only option. If there is a limited amount of cash, Guirassy will be available after relegation, or Muriqi could be resonable. All offer the physicality we miss with Kane out, that Son or Moura can’t/don’t offer.

Could probably do that for £60m, maybe less. A figure quite possibly recouped with sales of Aurier?, Rose, Foyth?, Carter-Vickers, Sissoko?, Lamela.

I fear a lot of teams will leave us behind quality wise. You'd have probably said we were at a similar level to Chelsea, but with Werner and Ziyech in I wouldn't be so sure. There's now 4 or 5 teams that demonstrably have more quality than us, with 2 of them being miles ahead.

If we don't invest we're heading the way of Arsenal, Everton, Sheff U level. Getting back in the Europa League would be considered a success.

I agree, some of their loan deals they have done and getting them into the team have been very good.
i honestly can't remember the last good loan deal we have had were we got the player into the first team. (maybe Harry).

Eh, you make your own luck. We've been shit in the transfer market for years, they've proven to be pretty good at it for over a decade now.

I think backup CF with some presence is just as important. It was so painful watching us play with Moura up top, we had no ‘out ball’ and as such turned the vall over time and again, just inviting repeat pressure onto ourselves.
The one constant in all Mourinho systems has been a focal physical striker. Chelsea (1) - Drogba, Inter - Milito, Real Madrid - Benzema, Chelsea (2) - Costa, Utd - Lukaku.

Fair point. I don’t mind Son replacing Kane, but as you’ve said, having Moura up there doesn’t work. The usual tough job of finding someone top class that will only play when Kane is out I suppose.

It's a pretty sad state that a few years ago we only needed two or three players to make us a trophy winning team and now we only have two or three players that would undoubtably keep their place.
