I totally agree that our fullbacks are a weakness, but while a top dm improves fullbacks, top fullbacks will still end up over exposed with our current midfield options.

We have to start with addressing our midfield balances. The right balance in midfield enhances every other position on the pitch as it leads to overall better team possession and movement. Case in point, the same full backs we have derided were all exceptional in 16/17. Not just Rose and Walker, but Trippier and Davies too.

That's very true and we also had Dier playing DM and dropping into a back 3 when we were going forward. That allowed our FBs to be agressive without weakening us too much at the back. Shame it seemed to be scrapped for some unknown reason.

Knowing Levy... He would only spend if we get CL next season.. He would only gamble if he knows money coming in.. We need to get that spot to have any transfer activity bar the usual bargains

Sure CL is part of the equation but we will have funds from TV and whilst not particularly relevant at the minute - matchday revenue. So there is money in the mix regardless of CL - but how much is definitely the question.

With the general uncertainty, we are better placed to spend some money than most but 'gambling' is probably not a good way to think of it - anyone doing that in a big way could land themselves in serious trouble.

Honestly it has not a lot to do with Levy if we do not spend too much this summer. I am almost certain we will see just a few moves with any significant transfer fees (20m +) involved in whole Europe. Some Sponsoring deals will be a struggle to finalize (as a lot is paid for Business seats), matchday revenue won't be there as usual, TV money could fall with every lockdown.

We know not enough about the virus so planning will be super hard for the clubs and they probably need all income to finance the already under contract staff and everything else that belongs to a football club. Not to mention rates of bank loans for our stadium that needed to be financed.
Even if we qualify for Europe, there is not even a guarantuee the competition will take place or maybe only in a shorter version without fans.

And it will be hard to tell your staff and players in autumn/winter: We need you to work for reduced salaries when you just spunked out X million for a player from somewhere a few months before.

As we are so much in a need of fresh legs and faces, e.g. RB, CDM, Second Striker and maybe CB I think we will try to do something somehow. But as a well driven business it will be a very tough ask this summer. Very interesting.

I think I would look to sell Foyth, KWP, Rose, CCV and Sissoko without replacement and bring in a RB if we can shift Aurier. With Dier moving back we can probably skip CB for now and try to get a DM and another cheapish forward option for when Kane inevitably breaks down again.

Personally, I'd keep Foyth and try him at DM/CB like Dier used to play. If Dier got away with it I don't see why Foyth couldn't with his skill set. Like I've said before, if Foyth was playing for Ajax we'd be clamouring to sign him. Infortunately, Mourinho seems to have binned him after one mistake v Norwich (which was a foul IMO anyway) so I doubt we'll see it happen.

Great idea as long as his mindset improves. He is fabulously talented but doesn't always recognize the speed or cleverness of opposing forwards when he has the ball. If his mind catches up to his skills, then he is one to keep

Teams will be wary of second covid wave, doubt we spend much. Skipp, Cirkin, Foyth, Sessegnon, Tanganga, Parrott (maybe I'm forgetting someone) hopefully improve and get a chance (and Tanganga solidfies a place in starting 11).

Completely agree. In his defence he's had very few chances and has made some bad mistakes but very, very few young defenders get through their formative years without some real howlers. I'll be very disappointed if he gets sold.

If we move to a 4-3-3 and ask the DM to sit in front of the back 4 and just protect them, I think both Skipp and Foyth could be effective. Even Winks if he is told not to roam too much. Would need to be more dynamic at full back so would love to see us sign Aarons and see if we can develop Sessegnon.

Aurier seems to get pelters all the time but I think he was making big improvements last season when he was given licence to attack more. I'm not sure we should sell him but I'm sure many have made their minds up way back and won't forgive him anything.

If Jose can get his mentality right, he's a massive asset. If he can't, he is a massive liability. And there doesn't seem to be any in between for him.

He gives away a legit goal scoring opportunity due to a brain fart at least once a game. He’s probably better than Trippier was but not by much and he costs us game after game.

Levy would never gamble...its not in his nature as previous seasons show

But everything changed. We pressed and closed down the space at the front. In the last 2 Poch seasons (at least) we gave up on that. A system that had provided success. Why?

I don't think Aurier has the pace or energy to play the role required in a 433 as he doesn't get back quick enough. Walker and Rose were key players in our success as they pretty much covered their whole flanks on their own. I just can't see Aurier ever doing that but I think Aarons could.

I don’t think there are many rbs who have the recovery pace that walker had. That made up for many mistakes- not just his own! He also had the inclination to sprint back. None of our full backs had that. Not serge, not trippier and of course not rose. We were strongest when dier could slip into the defence to make a back three, especially as both Toby and jan had experience at Ajax as full backs. The system was perfect and hid so many flaws.
This is why foyth puzzles me. He could play in a range of these roles. Rb/rcb/cdm. He’s so good on the ball. Maybe it’s a case of the wizard of oz ‘ if he only had a brain’. I think we should persevere with him

All the talk of ‘a striker that could play with or instead of Kane‘ had me wondering who could really fit the bill.

In an ideal world I’d be thinking of Richarlison - though he signed a 5 year contract in December and Everton would be wanting North of £50mil, so I guess we can forget about that one for now!

Possibly not the bargain many be thinking of but actually would fit the mould of a rotation option/sub really well if you can get someone like Ings, at the right time. Timing being key really, he's probably enjoying his football a bit too much at the mo and regular football is probably why he's performing.

But get a player like this who is out of favour and offers a range of styles in attack and i think it would add a lot to us.

Ings is 27 and scored 18 in 33 so far this season - definitely a bit of a resurgence for him after a spell of injuries.

I agree, to be fair though our whole defensive setup is pretty poor for a team with Top 4 and CL ambitions. I think if we can tighten up everything in defence then he could become a good option in that role, especially if we can get him to cut out some of his errors.
