I also think we should strip Norwich when they go down. They've got everything we're missing including pukki as a back up striker.
It’s such a risky move trying asset- strip a relegated team of their players. You could argue that Bournemouth have lots of good players too in Wilson, king, brooks, Fraser, Ake and Lerma. But they’re in and around the bottom 3 because of these players surely?
So then the challenge becomes about deciding which players in relegated teams can improve when surrounded by better players or better coaching.
For me, it’s the following:
Norwich: Aaron’s ( but is he better defensively than Aurier? Jury is out on that for me)
Villa: Grealish (but that ship sailed when we got Lo Celso, Ndombele and Gedson)
Bournemouth: Brooks (has his absence whilst injured been a factor in their decline?)
I think we’re only talking about Fraser because he’s on a free, but he’s also missed chunks of the season. He’s a squad player for us.
Watford: Sarr maybe....
West Ham: Rice as a cdm maybe.... Doubt West ham would sell to us
Southampton: Hojbjerg. I like his mentality. He started his career at Bayern and I think he’s been looking for a way back up to that level. I think he’s underrated.

Agreed. The one i'm actually most unsure about is Aarons even though i'd definitely take him for a knockdown fee. I'd personally be looking at all of Lewis, Godfrey, Aarons, Cantwell and Pukki.

Pre-pandemic Godfrey was the centre half I wanted us to pay good money for as he's very talented, English with good leadership traits. Maybe if they go down we could tempt them with £25m or so.

Pick of players with 1 year left. I've excluded unrealistic deals such as Messi, Pogba, Sane etc.

Keepers:
Donnarumma
Burki
Pavlenka
Butland

Defenders:
Boly
J.Evans
Mandi
Upamecano
Ginter
Elvedi
R.Koch

Full backs:
Castagne
Hysaj
Bertrand
Alaba
Telles
Bernat

Midfielders:
Zielinski
De Roon
Matuidi
Matic
Hojbjerg
James Rodriguez
Rakitic
R.Puig
Thiago
Draxler
Kampl
N.De La Cruz
Bellingham
Sangare
Eze

Forwards:
Ferran Torres
Lucas Vazquez
B.Mendez
Depay
Thauvin
Reyna

Strikers:
Milik
Higuain
Batshuayi
King
Giroud
D.Costa
Marega

Surely some good players here we could get for a reasonable price. Especially those at cash strapped clubs.

Can't help but think that if KWP and Foyth were getting regular minutes elsewhere there'd be a clamour for us to sign them up.

This is why players like KWP and Foyth should have been sent out on loan for a couple of seasons when they were 18/19.

You either play them or let them play somewhere else.

Only then will you know how good they are.

Not convinced at all by KWP. Don't think he is athletic or strong enough. Foyth played a decent amount last year and was setup for a big role this year.

I remember when Hojbjerg was a 20 year old at Bayern Munich and we were linked. The majority on here were jizzing over the prospect of signing him.

Now hes Prem proven, posting up the best defensive stats in the league and in coming into his prime years nobody wants him.

NUTTERS!

I wouldn't say nobody wants him, as I have seen q fair few on here saying they want him, and I would want us to sign him also.

I was exaggerating slightly for comedic affect.

Yes I think hed be a quality signing. Probably get him for 17-20m range which might get you somebody untested from France. Seems like the right character to him as well which is so important.

And also another leader on the pitch! As I feel we miss someone like that in CM to run the team.

Question on PEH...is he really delivering the best defensive stats in the league or are they massively boosted by the club factor?

In almost every measure, PEH is top 10 in the league, but so is JWP, which may suggest his stats are a result of his surroundings. In fact, percentage wise and 'per min', his stats don't stand out to me, however I may be looking at the wrong measures.

Also, his on ball stats like dispossessions/mis-controls are very high for his position, which concerns me with the intensity of the opposition press.

He's obviously not a bad player and would be relatively cheap, so not a poor signing, but i'm not as sold as others.

I agree with you re: Southampton's system and its effect on defensive statistics. Hojbjerg is certainly not a pure DM or destroyer like people are suggesting. In fact, he is the joint 8th most dribbled by player in the Premier League which shows he's not necessarily a great 1v1 defender.

I think he's an average player and would be a very underwhelming signing for us. I mean how many of you would actually be excited about signing him??

I'd say maybe he'd be better than our current DM options but I truly think if Winks and Dier were at Southampton they'd have similar stats. To me he's one of those players (sort of like Winks) that is good at nearly every part of the game, but not necessary great at anything. He isn't an athletic, physical defensive midfielder and he's not a creative maestro either.

He's taller than Winks (hence why he wins more aerial duels) and has a better shot from distance, but Winks is definitely faster and more composed on the ball IMO. For this reason I'd rather us continue to develop Winks and Skipp than spend the majority of our limited transfer funds on Hojbjerg. If Jose utilizes a 3 man midfield instead of a double pivot, I think Winks will shine. However, that does not mean we shouldn't be searching for a player that is an improvement on Winks. If we do this though, we should be looking for players who will be long term solutions for us, and I just can't help but feel that Hojbjerg will not be that for us.

Yeah I'd be happy with Hojbjerg. I don't know what people expect to be honest but knowing us I'd be expecting to go into deadline still looking for a defensive midfielder so forgive me in not just wanting to settle for a fairly exciting player in that role. I'd just be happy in getting someone in who can play there to some effect.

Pre coronavirus I would have said different, but now I'm not sure just how picky we can be.

I like PEH in his interview he seems fully aware that his job is to let others play and seems to be the leader that we are desperate for. I agree with the people that aren’t sold on him, but maybe we need to look at what overall he’ll bring more than just the visual imagine of him. We have Ndombele and lo Celso to be the 9/10 players on there day. You need a couple of steady 7/10 players around them and I think PEH fits that for us.

Kante has more disposessions and miscontrols, so tbh don't know how to read this as Kante is elite DM :D

Just checked that and he was making very similar stats also pre Ralph(recoveries where he is the best itl this season, and I can't say the same about their other midfielders so it's clear that's his style. Other defensive stats were also very good before Hasenhuttl.

Hojberg would be my main focus if I were Jose. We've seen in the past ten years, that when we have a great DM, the team as a whole is much better. (Palacios, Sandro, Wanyama). Though, weirdly enough the aforementioned were all sorta scythed down by either injury or personal issues. So, even if we did very little business this summer, I think signing Hojberg would have an outsized impact, versus, let's say signing a back up striker or new RB or new CB. My money (what little I have), would go to the DM spot.

After that, I think we'll be relying on loans, free transfers and swap deals to augment in other areas of the team. Like I said earlier, I'd be shocked if we had a net spend over any more than 10M over the next transfer window.
