The Top 4 myth

There's no doubting watching us win a major trophy was a great moment.

But the reality is in the Prem, the only teams who regularly win trophies are at the top end of the table.

I was having this conversation yesterday, our last 6 or 7 finals I can remember have all been against Chelsea, City, United, Liverpool.
The first finals I can remember in the 80's/90's were City, QPR, Anderlecht, Liverpool, Coventry, Notts Forest and Leicester.

Football has changed and it is very difficult for teams to win trophies unless they're in that top six bracket.

Newcastle just won a cup and qualified for the CL via the league. That's what we should be aiming for IMHO. As a few others have said, the top teams are generally also the ones winning the cups these days. I just don't think being a midtable side who regularly win cups is a realistic expectation any more.

They didn’t have European football this season did they ?

The theory used to be that you need CL football in order to attract the top players. Top players then give you more chance at silverware.

Then Chelsea & Utd proved you don't need CL football to attract top players you just need lots of money.

Even now, after the season they’ve had finishing 15th, no European football, club in chaos behind the scenes, players being shamed publicly by the manager, they’re still wrapping up deals for Cunha & Mbuemo.

It's not really about top four or Champion's League.

It's about winning more games than we lose.

I personally don't enjoy having to sit through 9 months of shite in return for a couple of days of celebration.

Trophy monkey is off our back for now.. fantastic.
