I think a more defensively solid RB could work if we’re planning to transition Sessegnon into the LB spot. A bit like Perreira and Chilwell at Leicester, the former is more of an attacker and the latter more of a natural defender.

More assists and goals from the left as a rule.

That might give us two pairs, if we go for someone as Aarons as well. Aarons/Davies and Ferguson/Sessegnon. Works good on paper anyway.

Dani Olmo scored in his first cap for the Senior Spanish team. Would love him as the alternate #10 when Eriksen leaves.

He also looks quick enough to play in the forward line and lineup with Son - Kane - Olmo up top.

Works good on paper but when you compare them to what we had 3 seasons ago in Rose/Walker we have seriously downgraded. We would have to wait a few seasons before we see any consistent top level performances from any of those players bar Davies. They’re talented options but I can’t help but think we’ve missed our chance to build on top of a fantastic squad and kick on, yet now we find ourselves ‘rebuilding” once again.

Just trying to think who we missed out on last year in the summer. I think we were only strongly linked to Sessegnon, Gomes, Malcom, and Martial when he threw his toys out the pram. Obviously linked to the Ajax lads as well who went on to Barcelona and Juventus this summer. Only a handful of players that moved would have improved us, but it is galling that there was no movement.

This is interesting from the Guardian.. 2014s top 40 young players in the world. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...0-of-the-best-young-talents-in-world-football

There are updates of how they’re getting on. Players are about 22 now. 5 years later how many would we like at spurs ?
Tielemans
Dembele at Barca
Benjamin Henrichs possibly ?
Neves at Wolves
Jovic at Real

10% hit rate ? Many more than that are barely scraping by professionally. Majority having ok careers but nowhere near spurs quality.

Just goes to show how tricky it is to turn promise into top quality. Tricky business this scouting malarkey !

And Jovic/Dembele still struggling to make an impact at their respective clubs, of course Jovic only just arrived at Madrid so needs a season.

I saw Bogle a couple of times last season and thought he looked really good.

He looks a hell of a prospect and very attack minded... skill, pace, can both cross and pass the ball. No doubt our scouts won’t have heard of him lol

Olmo, Ferguson, Upamecano and Zakaria would be a fantastic window and one that I think is realistic even for January. Addresses many of our key areas with young players who could bring some much needed vim and vigor to the side.

I hate to be completely negative, but this season very much feels lost (no Top 4, no trophies) so bringing on these players sooner rather than later, giving them the opportunity to get acclimatized over the 2nd half of the season could be paramount in our attempt to "get right" next season.

I think we face a real dilemma with the fullbacks going into the January window.

On the one hand there's no doubt that pretty much all of Rose, Davies, and Aurier have been quite poor so far this season and that the performances we're getting from the fullbacks are really hurting us both in defense and in attack. On the other we've got Sessegnon lined up to become our future LB and Poch made it clear in interviews in the summer that he loves the idea of giving Foyth the playing time he needs to mature as a defender by playing him at RB.

So we're faced with a situation where we could really stand to make immediate improvements at what is a crucial position in the modern game, but where bringing in first-choice quality options would both impede the progress of two hugely talented young players and cost a lot of money that could be devoted to addressing other problems.

I personally like the idea of bringing in Nathan Ferguson, at least in theory. I've admittedly seen very little of him but looking around at media reports, Twitter, and a number of posts in this thread, he's getting rave reviews. He's right-footed and will probably be a right back in the long term, but 9 of his 13 appearances this season have come at LB and he's (at least reportedly) been hugely impressive. His contract is up in the summer so WBA seem to be willing to let him go for a very reasonable fee in January if he doesn't sign a new one.

With that one signing we'd allow ourselves to get rid of Aurier and Rose (or at least to sideline Rose if he insists on doing a Winston Bogarde) and to loan or sell KWP so he can progress in his career, without sacrificing the necessary squad depth. We'd have Davies/Ferguson at LB and Foyth/Ferguson at RB, with other players in the squad who could slot in as third choices in case of any injury. It'd allow us to integrate Sessegnon as an attacker with a view to gradually moving him back as well as give Foyth the playing time he needs, while still allowing for appropriate rotation on both sides.

If Ferguson seizes the opportunity and establishes himself as our RB of the future then we'll have solved one of the major problems in the squad, and even if he doesn't he'd likely make for a decent homegrown squad player brought in on a low fee. If he's as good as advertised, it'd be a perfect bit of business for us to do in January.

How about a straight 6 month swap deal with Real. Eriksen for Bale? We still pay Eriksens wages and they pay for Bales

Real could then see if he is good enough to offer a long term deal. Everyone's a winner

That will probably cost £150m

calling that realistic is a bit deluded

The issue is, and I hope Levy is on the same page, if we don't invest now without Champions League, and Champions League money, it will be harder to attain Champions League and the benefits again. A lack of movement is exactly what the likes of Arsenal, United and Leicester are hoping for so they can steal a march on us. A gulf can very quickly appear. Then we'd be looking in from the outside as we did post-Redknapp.

Unless we change our recruitment policy and contract policy, we must act decisively.

We might have to do as under Redknapp, buy Premier League proven players to avoid relegation. Top foreign talents will take time to adjust to the Premier League.
