A playmaking CM (absolutely not a DM).

Exactly what we don't need right now.
I’m not sure where he’d fit in, but if we can buy players who keep the ball better that can’t hurt. The other team can’t score if you have the ball.

There's nothing to suggest he's anything other than potential atm. He's had 45 mins all season.

We have limited money as it is. If we prioritise anything other than defenders and a DM then that's just crazy.

Anyone have a view on Carles Alena of Barca? Being linked with him

Talk in Spanish press is that we've agreed a loan deal for January, currently with no option to buy. Spurs want to make it a 2 year deal whereas Barca want it to be a 1 year deal.

My understanding of him is that he's a good, all round central midfielder. Box to box. Good passer, as you'd expect from a young spaniard. Loves to carry at speed but equally able to clip an accurate cross field pass. Reminds me of Lo Celso to be honest, so he'd be a welcome addition with Eriksen going. We need more of these types of players in our squad IMO.

The reality is that he's unlikely to break through at Barca when they're signing the likes of De Jong from Ajax. He made 17 apps (2 goals) for first team and 8 apps, 3 goals for Barca B, last season.

Can't see him having any more impact than Ceballos at Arse, short term at least.

Sometimes if a player you think has potential is available you’ve just got to jump on it even if it’s not a priority position. We didn’t sign the likes of Maddison because we thought we were strong in that position and regretted it.

I think that specific one was stupid at the time. Now we have issues to address, we don't have the luxury to add random players to positions that don't need it.

Otherwise I do agree with you, but the current shit state we're in doesn't allow for that.

True, but Maddison wanted guaranteed first team football which Leicester offered but we couldn't. At the time there was no way he was getting past Eriksen.

Exactly. Not getting Maddison is frustrating but we reportedly tried when he went to Norwich and again when he joined Leicester. Now he is performing to a high level for a good Prem side with money behind them his fee will be astronomical. Can't really fault us for not getting him.

Buying players isn't only determined on money. When buying young players we have to factor in the stage of their development. Buy too young and we can stunt their growth as we are at a high level and getting minutes on the pitch is difficult. Buy too late and the fee is huge and elite clubs buy if the player reaches that level.

Not sure I buy that. If we’d really wanted him we could have offered him more money. That line just sounds like his agent trying to hardball us. Plus the ITK said that we weren’t sure.

I don't think we were really in for him at all. Not at Norwich anyway.

Yep. Very typical Barca midfielder in the same vain as Iniesta, Xavi, David Silva, etc. Don't know a single thing about the guy. But from what I can see, he seems to be one of those midfielders that move quickly with the ball at the feet, and pass the ball quickly too. Not much dawdling around.. taking three to four touches (AKA, Dele and Eriksen), when one or two touches is all they need to get themselves set.

I've been saying for a while now, that we now have two of those types on our team (Lo Celso, Ndombele), and with a third, who's perhaps a more defensive minded, we'd have ourselves a highly dynamic midfield, that wouldn't see us constantly getting overrun. The types of players that don't lose their touch and composure when the opposition applies a modicum of pressure. Players that constantly look to advance the play, and attack with urgency. Something our midfield has been missing for a long time.

Fernandes is a really intertsing one. He has great goal and assist output but he does divide opinion from Portugese fans I know.
