You don't do one without the other when the austerity for the football team ("the product" itself) is this long-term. You find a way - and I agree with JJ - the owner should be putting his hand in his pocket.

Otherwise we're just here to clap a spreadsheet.

you got to remember when ENIC 1st took us over Man U, and Arsenal where dominant and to be honest we was dross, and would of taken massive amounts of money to turn us around. they then saw Leeds do what they did and didn't want to take the risks. Next thing you know Abramovic turns up, buys a reasonably successful team, that already had plenty of decent players in it's ranks and ploughs money into it (only good thing was it damaged Arsenal).

then we start putting plans together to build a new stadium, only 56k at the time, and another kid with money to throw away turns up and puts another hurdle in the way.

our best 3 seasons which had any glimmer of winning the PL, was the Nelson/Saha year, Leicester winning it though the squad was very settled, played better football and just needed that winning mentality. the other was Chelsea the year after, but we had to many draws away from home which cost us. both the Leicester and Chelsea years was hard to sign that player that might of tipped it our way, as in general our starting XI was hard to improve on. all 3 of those seasons have come at a time where the Stadium had already had a fair amount of finance put in to

We at a crossroads, so yes a once off cash injection of say £150 million in addition to reinvesting player sales cash would help. You dont have to treat it like a play thing just sensible assistance in helping the club push on and remain competitive.

Imagine what a £ 150 million outlay on some quality additions would have done to our current campaign... It would have us closer to Liverpool in the league and guaranteed CL for next season.

the thing is that isn't a guarantee. we could of spent £150m, and those players might of struggled to settle in the hardest and fastest league (was going to add physical, but that medal goes to the championship and below), they might of got a season ending injury their 1st game.

no 1 knows what might of been, had in store

Joe Lewis is 82 and is worth about £5 billion. If he wanted to have been a sugar daddy he’d of invested in us massively from the start. He hasn’t and that’s not going to change.

What’s more interesting is where we go now. He might live to a 100 or he might not. He’ll either want to sell us before or after he does (say in his will) or what I expect will happen, his daughter will take over. Now it depends what she wants to do. I reckon it will be more of the same but she might have a different idea on what to do. The next ten years will be interesting in terms of ownership, that’s for sure.

As for transfers in the summer I’m fully expecting the same, even though we spent nothing in the last 12 months. We will only spend what we claw back in sales.

We’ve been told for a year now- from various reputable sources-that even before sales, we have money to spend. So even with what we make from Toby and Eriksen, there should be more. Hypothetically speaking anyway.

My guess is that Levy looks at purchases as investment opportunities and therefore factors in all the asociated risks and benefits. A not unreasonable thing to do. But this might also be the problem. Say Poch really wants a player like De Jong, and is prepared to spend, for example, 70% of his transfer budget on it, including high agent fees. For Levy that might prove too risky, especially if that player doesn’t prove their value- you’ve essentially invested a huge chunk of your budget on one investment opportunity and it’s now depreciating. When operating on relatively tight financial constraints, that’s potentially a huge problem. Far safer is the option to invest the budget on three players so even if one or even two are less successful, you’re likely to lose less money on the depreciated value of the less successful player(s). And furthermore, there’s more chance your other player(s) actually do well and their value increases. At the very least you have a greater chance of breaking even or making a profit. It’s a far less risky, less potentially damaging strategy. And it’s understandable too, from the point of view of a club that’s always been run with a more conservative fiscal policy.

Problem is, it causes tension with Pochettino who has started refusing the less risky, and therefore less appropriate, targets for his and the squad’s needs to add better quality. This is what appears to be unfolding around us over the last two windows and it seems to be entering the final stages of who blinks first. Either Poch gives in and embraces the strategy of buying potential, Levy decides to take the greater risk or the manager walks. Something will have to give, because the current dynamic will become more damaging for the squad with each inactive window

Grealish and Bowen would be excellent signings IMO.

Grealish could be a very good player for us if/when Eriksen leaves imo. I’ve watched him a good few times since we were linked last summer and he really makes villa tick, they were useless when he was injured recently and as soon as he came back they start playing well again instantly

I want us to sign Grealish and Bowen to piss the knee jerkers off(y)

not seen a full match with Bowen but he definitely knows how to find the net, a bit like James of Swansea. we need to boost our HG up, and if we where to look at selling Trippier and Rose, with KWP being official next season, those 2 would make us legal to have a 25 man squad for CL

If the ITK was correct in stating that Poch refused players in the last couple of windows I think it could come to a head if we don't finish in the top 4. I'm sure Poch is 100% safe but I think Levy might try to wrestle a bit of transfer policy control back which could cause problems. If Poch's stubbornness has set us back I'd expect some repercussions and to be honest, some of the players Poch has set his heart on in the past have turned out to be donkeys, so maybe a bit more faith in the scouts is needed.

Honestly think if some of these names were coming from France, Holland or had an -inho on the end of their name, then there wouldnt be as much griping.

Grealish is top drawer and Bowen has tonnes of potential in a league where some of our youth stars more often than not fail to cut the mustard.

Swiss Ramble saying that it's looking like Villa won't make FFP might help and Hull are never going up this season. Both homegrown, both make crazy sense to me.

(If we signed Bowen, I'd see if we could sell Lucas...don't feel he's worth the foreign player place tbh.)

I would sell lamela before Lucas.
Lamela has not delivered on a regular basis for a few years now and it seems he can’t play 2 games in a week due to his past injuries

Grealish is an almost entirely natural talent. You look at the managers he’s had at Villa and it’s a who’s who of mediocrity. Poch can definitely extract some more from the well.

Agreed. Also would be more of a like-for-like swap with Bowen.

To be honest though we’re desperate for an injection of pace in several areas of the pitch, which Bowen isn’t. Son, Sissoko and, to a lesser extent, Rose and Lucas are the only players with any pace to speak of. I’d be interested if anyone could name a top side in world football that has a front 4 players as collectively slow as Eriksen, Dele, Son and Kane. As great as they are, that’s pretty unusual, and there’s a good reason for that. Especially when you consider our backups to these players are Llorente, Lamela and Lucas.

Trying desperately to find a positive here by I do think if Eriksen leaves there is opportunity to re-balance the side and add some pace and quality to the front 3, solidify our midfield, and add pace again at fullback. It probably won’t all happen in one window but if Poch wants to go again with us I think we can re-build over the next year or so and come back even stronger.

Something I absolutely loved about the team of 2 years back was the balance Poch installed. We had a world class centre-back partnership, a world class finisher, a sprinkle of class (Eriksen, dele, son, dembele) and frankly, between the gaps, we made sure we had physical beasts - whom Poch is exceptionally good at getting the best out of. Dier, wanyama, walker, rose. Add Sissoko to that category now.

When you can’t go out and buy the absolute best player in every first 11 position, you have to box smart, and having a team of 6ft+ units with a fair distribution of pace in and around your stars can give you a fighting chance against any team.

It’s going to be an interesting window that’s for sure. My big hope is that Poch stays. Personally I think he is as frustrated as us (beginning to show in his interviews etc) as he knows, like we do, that our “golden generation” moment may have passed. I do hope he can sit down with Levy and agree a new plan to re-build and push on though, he’s a great coach and we’re capable of going out and getting some top young players for Poch to mould into a new vision.

Good going to be a 21 year lad footballer and not have a single mention on google. The video looks like something from the fast show ?

To me, Lucas doesn't suit the English game. Don't mind him as a player, but he's either good or anonymous.

Lamela, along with being more robust, offers more centrally than Lucas does and has a better eye for a pass IMO...plus he signed a new contract last year, cant see him going tbh.

The PSG bargains don't seem to be bargains to me at this point and I don't feel either are worth the foreign player places they're using.

Dunno anything about this but I checked his Facebook and there seems to be a lot of hype about this. Also he has very hot women as friends there. Great signing.
