We’re hardly going for Lionel bloody Messi. Let’s jush work off the players that JJ has quoted in his posts, would you say any of them were world beaters?

Last summer I’ll bet my house the vast majority on here had never heard of De Jong or N’Dombele, they were still relatively unknown to the wider public. We failed to get either over the line. We even screwed up average player, for our current CL level, Grealish. Go back a few years Martial (2015), Mane (16), Wijnaldum (16), etc.

None of these players went for stupid money relative to our budget back then. But we have owners who have a reluctance to go that extra yard & we end up with you fcuking N’koudous of this world. Penny pinch around Mane, watch him go to a rival who had no European footy at that time & then go panic buy Sissoko* for pretty much the same cost as Mane. Genius that!!!

*I’m aware Sissoko has come good now, but it’s taken almost 2 1/2 years & change of position for us to see best of him ?‍♂️

Martial and mane both went for stupid money at the time

To be honest, I do feel now that the squad needs a major shake-up, even if that means that Toby + Eriksen are sold. We've obviously got a mentality issue and part of that for me is players going a bit stale here.

Of course that would have been helped if we'd freshened up last summer but here we are. Can only deal with the present.

Disappointed to see JJ's tweets that Poch may still go, even with United and Real Madrid out of the picture. That's the main issue for me.

Player-wise, it sounds like we really need to secure the Champions League place to ensure we have a chance at our targets. Hopefully we can do that but I'm not confident. Potentially the end of an era.
Sorry, what has JJ said about Poch?

We were in for Martial before MUFC. We like usual refused to pay asking price (£20m odd), Monaco told us to do one & signed him to new contract. 8 weeks later sell him to MUFC for £50m.

Mane went for £34m, weeks later we panic & spunk £30m on Sissoko.

2019/20 has a real air of 'transitional season' about it - just hope this is mitigated by us qualifying for Champions League (£££).

End of the day we're not an elite team. It's not only a question of money/CL qualification, it's a question of prestige. At the level of talent we are targeting the player is always going to be on the radar of more prestigious/richer teams. This means any negotiations will get strung out until the player/team/agent are sure that the more elite clubs won't come in for them. It's just the way the food chain is.

Yes, we can target other less talented players but ultimately that isn't going to help us progress as a club.

I seriously doubt we could have got martial for 20m and weeks later he got sold for 50m new contract or not and if martial wanted to come he wouldn’t have signed a new deal.
34m was way over the odds at the time, A’s was 30m for Sissoko

At this moment if we lose Eriksen and Toby it wouldn’t bother me both are replaceable. £100 for both I’d take it. We would need to alter the way we play and that’s not a bad thing they’re other players out there capable.

Kane Dele would be very hard to replace Son too. I just hope we sort our full backs out get a commanding DM and have a solid foundation first.

“Eriksen can be replaced” is fair to say, but also utterly delusional and definitely reflective of the club’s arrogant, mislead belief.

Thinking like that has led to us going through an injury crisis this year, with no adequate stand-ins. We’ve had no plan B for when Eriksen isn’t firing, or when Son can’t miraculously bag us an undeserved goal. We have been shit for a few months, Dortmund aside, and we’ve thrown away a massive gap on those outside the top 4. If we don’t get champions league this year, it’s because we’re run by arrogant twats whose transfer ideology holds no bearing on reality.

New stadium looks cool though. Shame our first European game there next year will probably be a Europa League qualifier

Utterly delusional to believe we can replace a single player? When did one player become bigger than the club, we should just pack up as a club if we don't believe we can replace one player. He's a quality player but come on.

That's no longer working, what was it?
I’m not to upset as long as we get a decent fee, we’ve had him for seven years and he could’ve probably left quite easily in some of those season but stuck with us, if Real Madrid is his dream move we shouldn’t stand in his way
Not sure if it's down for anyone else but I can't view this.

Any case, it isn't a surprise, is it?
It's JJ saying he wants to leave and he has turned his own head. Sorry can't do the link properly

He can be replaced, but it doesn’t mean he will. We will not pay the going rate for somebody of his quality. Source: our entire history.

I dont think it will be like for like, it will need to be a shift in playstyle and some creativity in the market but we always find a way.

The list of teams he would leave us for can't be very long, you have to imagine. The number of those who'll actively be pursuing a new manager this summer will be even fewer.

Where are the most likely destinations? Paris? Munich? Another part of London...?

We tend to play Eriksen away from his preferred role for the most part - fitting him in to the side of Alli oftentimes, the number 10 role where Eriksen himself would rather be. If we assume Alli and Son are retained and played as part of a three behind Kane, you could make a case that we might be better off bringing in a talented natural wide forward/winger. I'm not necessarily saying your case would be the strongest ever, but you could make it...

Quite a good business model for other clubs to just wait until we're in the closing stages of a deal and then come in and gazump and take the player themselves. In the knowledge of how long it takes us to get them over the line, and the likelihood Levy will be trying to screw down some late changes in our favour.

Surely what you have said shows why we occasionally wait until late in the window to work on deals. If the weathlier rival clubs have already spent their money it leaves us with a greater chance to sign someone we are interested in etc

Well statistically speaking we are having our best season right? Highest points total and quarter finals of Champions League, We managed to replace King, Modric, Bale and VDV. so I feel like we've been able to adequately replace just failed to improve on enough to actually win a trophy.

Keep:

Lloris
Gazzaniga
Vertonghen
Foyth
Sanchez
Davies or Rose
Trippier or Aurier
Dier
Skipp
Winks
Eriksen if possible
Dele
Son
Lamela or Lucas
Kane

15 players I'd keep for the nucleus of the team moving into next season, meaning I'd be looking to shake it up around the fringes of the squad with players who can hopefully push onto push for first team action and impact the squad. Move on:

Vorm
Alderweireld
Davies or Rose
Trippier or Aurier
Wanyama
Sissoko (maybe a little harsh but his stock is higher than it will be so £££)
Walker-Peters on loan
Lamela or Lucas
Nkoudou
Janssen
Llorente
A few youth players that won't make it, Onomah, Ogilvie etc.

Focus on brining in the following positions:

3rd choice keeper (HG)
LB
RB
CM
CM
AM/WF
WF/ ST

If these are the areas we need to invest in, who would be your realistic choices???

Getting champions league last season didn’t result in us getting anyone in the summer. What matters to players is money, pay them enough and they will come, champions league or not.
