As a casual rugby watcher (only watch World Cups and the odd Six Nations game) it bemuses me that the starting XVs are declared a full day before kick off. I thought England were playing yesterday after I saw the team sheet.

Is there a particular reason for it, or is it just tradition?

I think knowing the exact team line up is much less of an advantage in rugby than it is in football. In football every thing can hinge on a specific match up. Say not knowing if crouch or defoe was going to start etc etc instead of specifically peoparing to face one or the other.

Fox Sports here has NZ vs South Africa
Channel 9 has Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels in the NRL Semi-Finals.

It's a rugby-fest tonight.
