Err we haven't even finished the race to 40 points yet. I think we have more chance winning Europa than finishing top 5. At best 7th is what we could do.

We’d need several of the teams above us to go on a bad run, while being near perfect ourselves.

Best shot is the Europa IMO

Just watched Neville's podcast and not a peep about us, the form team in the league*, in the discussion for the title or even CL places. Disappointing.

* over the last 3 matches

As much as I pumped the brakes earlier, I feel deceived and slighted every time I see that article on the BBC now about 11 teams for 4 places and we aren’t mentioned - because 5th will almost certainly get CL this year and Pool has the title locked up

Let’s get into the upper half of the table before we start hoping
Agreed. To be honest I just want the Europa. Mid table is fine for me this season, just don't want to finish 15th etc or flirt with relegation. If we finish 10th and win Europa it will be the best season I have seen in a long time!

Can we change the thread title to European rather than only CL please. Would love it if we won Europa and qualified for CL but realistically the likelihood of that remains pretty low.

So we also have to look at qualifying for Europe via the league. CL is out of the question IMO. But Europa or ECL (which frankly would probably be better for us in terms of squad development)? The league table right now is insanely compressed. 14 points between City in 4th on 44 points and W Ham in SIXTEENTH on 30. At the same time, still 10 points between us in 12th on 33 and Chelsea in 7th on 43.

Is it correct that if EPL gets 5 CL spots AND both domestic cup winners qualify for Europe on league position, 8th (currently Villa on 42 points from 27 games) gets ECL?

That seems to me at least as likely as winning Europa. Obviously try to do well in both but should we really give Europa priority?

Good grief.

The best Tottenham side that most of us have ever seen (2016-17) had a run in in the final 12 games of 33 points (only dropping in one game) - that would put us on 66 points which based on the last couple of years may still not be enough for top 5. Even with all of our players fit, that Tottenham side was superior to this one in pretty much every position on the pitch so I don't really see how anyone could expect us to go on a run like that with games at Anfield, Stamford Bridge (where we never take points), London Stadium (their cup final) etc all still to come.

Two points per game (Champions League form) for the rest of the season sees us finish on 57 which might just be enough for Conference League - but the smart move by the club is to rest and rotate to focus on winning the Europa League. If we get our players fit again and no more injury madness then I reckon we'll finish somewhere between 50-55.

I'm as glad as anyone to see us win three in a row, but threads like this are ridiculous and it's only a few days before we lose to City and everyone is doom and gloom again. We're finishing mid-table this season - no more, no less.

That is correct from my understanding. I even heard 9th could get a spot being suggested on a podcast the other day but not sure how that would work.

Were us or United to win the EL and finish outside all European spots and the rest of your scenario play out, England would have six teams in the CL and nine in total but I don't think 9th in the league will get you anything.

Totally agree with this - I saw the title and thought it was going to be ironic

No chance we get there through the league. No chance.

But winning 3 in a row has totally removed any risk relating to relegation, and removes pressure for the rest of the season - this is crucial, as it'll allow us to properly focus on (1) the Europa, and (2) also working through options for next season.

Both (1) and (2) are important. If we go into the close season having integrated all our youngsters, and with a more developed understanding of where we're short, we can hit the ground running in the new season.

I'm positive - way more than I was. But CL qualification via the league is a fantasy

Man Utd were 8 th last season with 60 pts. 27 pts from 12 games required for that. Win 9 out of 12 cos we very rarely draw. It’s a tall order especially as we still have to play 8 out of the top 10.
Got to be the Europa .

We did get 26 points from the first 10 games last season, just saying ;-)

Here's just one way we can win the league. It's fair to say there are a couple of other things that'd need to go our way, like Liverpool losing every single one of their remaining matches for a start...

Sidenote - it shows what a hole Saints are in that they can win all of their remaining matches apart from the one against us and still finish last.
