Well, at least I won't feel so bad about VISA interest rates, knowing that my moola is going toward helping Spurs buy new players!! ;)

I'm not an expert in this kind of deal but I wonder what VISA get out of it, surely everybody knows VISA but nobody chooses VISA for anything as we just choose a bank or credit card and get VISA. Is it for business to business reasons or is to raise VISA's profile in the far flung corners of the world where they watch the Premier league?

I'm guessing it would be this.

Don't they sponsor the NFL already? If so, their marketing team has presumably seen a ROI with that deal, so think a Premier League and Champions League related deal would also be beneficial.

I'm just interested to see how much it's for. According to a BBC article I posted previously our market rate is £17m a year.

Okay, this is interesting.

This article is from 2015 around the time that VISA renewed their sponsorship deal with the NFL.

It gives some insight into why they would want to sponsor high-profile organisations such as the NFL and the 49ers:

Visa, whose worldwide headquarters are in San Francisco, has extended its partnership with the 49ers and hopes to include every payment system it offers to fans at Levi's Stadium, which will be host of next year's Super Bowl. The stadium also provides the most dynamic testing environment due to the already complex systems set up for in-seat ordering and the high use of the latest technology from its Silicon Valley, early adopter crowd.

"Our slogan, 'Everywhere you want to be' has never been more relevant," Curtin said. "Whether you are using a phone, tablet or any device, we will be there. The payment marketplace has never been more competitive and we hope that consumers use Visa because it's a name they can trust."

The mobile payment business was worth an estimated $325 billion on 2014 and is expected to top $700 billion by 2017, according to technology research company Gartner. Visa has partnered with Apple Pay as well as built its own technology like Visa Checkout, which reduces the steps a consumer has to go through to complete an e-commerce transaction.

"Their evolution into technology will give our fans the best experience in payment innovation if they are at the game or at home," Anderson said.

Another interesting article from 2015, straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. Also includes some data at the end of the piece around payment companies' marketing spend:

https://www.sponsorship.com/IEGSR/2015/01/20/Inside-Visa-s-Evolving-Sponsorship-Strategy.aspx

3 main areas VISA were (still are?) looking at:

- Helping out their clients through sponsorship deals

- Selling new products

- Getting involved in social media linked to large sporting and other entertainment events

Why are Mastercard Fifa's cornerstone World Cup sponsor then? It's all about the prestige and the name awareness. It keeps Visa as someone you trust and always seems to have been around. All the traditional credit cards are gonna be under threat from Paypal and the rest in the next few decades.

I don't know why MasterCard are the World cup sponsor I didn't even know they were, as I said I am not an expert and wondered what they get out of it, Emirates I understood as who had heard of them before they started sponsoring football teams? I certainly didn't and to be honest I thought it was the actual Emirates that sponsored the Arsenal until I found out it was an airline. Your explanation helps if it is preemptive to meet the new media challenge I guess.

THE VISA ARENA - sounds perfect NFL games, English football ehhhhhh not so much

the stadium for NFL games will be known and announced as "The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium", just as it will when they talk up a CL match

Why? Almost every single NFL stadium has a naming rights deal.

I'm going by what I've been reading on hear over the last few years, and believed the NFL don't want to see adverts for something they don't benefit from. wasn't 1 of the reasons we decided to not put different coloured seats to show a large cockerel in the south something to do with NFL
