As others have said Pienaar's versatility will be a great benefit to the squad and he will play quite a few games if he comes here.

Everyone knows our most pointless signing EVER was Gilberto. His contract was ending in the summer and we could have signed him on a free transfer then, but we paid £2m to sign him early in January, despite the fact that he was injured in January and wasn't ready/able to play a first team game for months afterwards... and then he was bloody useless when he did play!

I think Comolli had more positives than he did negatives during his time at Spurs, but boy was signing Gilberto a damning argument against him!

Sky Sports News seem to think he's about to sign a pre-contract agreement with a major European club...

Why not just read the thread in Transfers on Pienaar, where the 'useless signing'/'useful signing' have been talked to death.

I am of the useful camp.

Agreed. We rely on pace out side, Pienaar fits that better

For this reason.

Lets see...

If Modric is out - Pienaar can cover.
If Lennon is out - Pienaar can cover.
If Bale is out - Pienaar can cover.
If VDV is out - Pienaar can cover.

So to conclude... you are wrong.

He would be a very very useful squad player.

And this reason.

A zippy player who would fit our style of play and can cover all four midfield positions, and each of those four positions almost as well, or better than the players wwe have had specifically to cover each one. What this means, in effect, is that we could have more cover for defence and attack on the bench, as having Peinaar on there would free up at least one space.

How can that be 'pointless'

As long as he accepts he is a squad player / back up and not a regular starter I can't see why we shouldn't buy him but he should be bought as a bench warmer / back up only

Couldn't disagree more with that article, its actually way off IMO and it sounds daft.

Pienaar has a very good work rate - better than most of our midfielders, he'll run all day. I like Niko, and I hope he stays, but he wont offer than grit that our squad is lacking. He's a silky sort of player, with great quality, but we need a better balance in this squad in terms of versatile options and flair players versus the ones who will put in a bit more of a shift. Pienaar offers that plus quality on the ball too. In short, he's very competitve and is a real team player - I can see why Harry wants him.

This has been mentioned several times as well - Pienaar is going to get far more game time than Niko because he can cover right across midfield, and do so effectively.

The contract situation makes this a very attractive deal IMO.

Surely Chimbonda round 2?

Pienaar would be a great addition to the squad
