I'll check back with you in 2029!

It's definitely a gamble. However, the Phillies needed star power. They've done very well this offseason, but getting Machado or Harper was imperative. They have lacked that star power since Utley, Rollins, Howard, Hamels, Halladay, etc. And yes, the deal is long, and for a lot of money, but the average yearly dollars is 25.4, which is pretty cheap for a player of his caliber. I could not be happier.

Wow. Huge gamble by the Phillies. It's funny just a few weeks ago people were complaining that free agents are not getting the deals they deserve. Just crunched the numbers and it averages out at almost 500k/week guaranteed for 13 years. Unless I've misread it none of the money has opt outs or extension options etc it's all guaranteed salary. For the Phillies sake I hope he lives up to his hype!

Yup. No opt outs. Full no trade. No deferred money. Yeah, he will have to produce. However, because he took a deal that is that long, and for less average money per year than Machado, he will be revered in Philly for a very long time.

Same AAV as Ryan Howard's deal. Only 2MM/yr more than Jason Heyward. I'd say the Union has some ammo going into 2021.

Slightly more per year than Heyward but nearly double the contract length. I'm not saying it's a bad deal, just that it's a high risk one if he picks up an ongoing niggle that sees his numbers drop. Maybe teams have some kind of insurance against the contracts just in case or something?

Hey guys, I know this is long but a game is not typically this long. MLB just decided to give you the 2 teams where games between them are normally 5 hours.

I didn't watch either of the London games because I was away for the weekend, but from what I've managed to read about it the whole stunt might've backfired a bit for MLB. The first game in particular sounds like it was a bit of a farce and with it dragging on so long I doubt they managed to win over any new fans who were just tuning in to give it a try.

I dunno, they've already announced a Cubs/Cards game over here next year so I guess they're going to push ahead with it anyway. I do find the whole thing pretty odd though. I get that they've seen the success of the NFL over here and are trying to get in on the action a bit, but the difference is the NFL spent years building up a bit of a following in the UK before they then started playing games here. They put the groundwork in and are now reaping the benefits of it. MLB on the other hand seem like they've just announced these games without first building up any kind of baseball following. I dunno, I just don't think at the moment much demand at all for them to play more MLB games in London and it wouldn't surprise me if they do it for a couple of years and then scrap it. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Watched the games on TV and as there were lots of hits and runs would have thought that made it exciting for a new audience

It depends though. High scores don't always mean it was a good game, especially not if it gets a bit farcical. For example, when you occasionally get football matches that finish e.g. 7-4 or something silly you'll often find its not especially good to watch because it's usually down to the two teams making lots of stupid mistakes/being all over the place. Like I say I didn't watch the games over the weekend but the first one especially sounds like it was a bit farcical. And given how long it went on for I can't imagine many casual observers stuck it out till the end

play-offs start next week. Honestly think there is little to separate the Astros, Yankees and Dodgers. Home field advantage may well decide it.

I'm a Yankee fan. Pitching separates us. In the postseason, pitching is absolutely massive. Our pitching has been an issue all season. We've given up more runs than 10 other teams in the league. We'll have a few pitchers on the roster who should be no where near the playoffs and with some, shouldnt even be on a normal 25 man regular season roster.

Dont see us beating the Astros. Home field advantage would be huge obviously but we're 1.5 games back with only 4 games left. Not going to happen. The NL is more up in the air. Dodgers usually blow it in October but the NL is also not that good this year which helps them. I think it'll be Astros/Dodgers with the Astros winning it.

well I grew up in Houston so that suits me fine. Combined batting and pitching I think we probably edge the Yankees and Dodgers but pitching usually decides it in the play-offs and the Dodgers have great pitching.

Was largely a formality at this stage anyway but the Cubs are now mathematically out of contention for the playoffs. Seems like Maddon will probably get fired based on the words coming out of Epstein. I've got mixed feelings about Maddon generally but I have to say I think it's harsh to fire him at this stage. While Maddon certainly hasn't been perfect, the blame for me lies more with the front office. Epstein has a lot of credit in the bank for turning the Cubs around initially but when you sit down and think about it, the last couple of years have been very poor from him and at the end of the day Maddon can only really work with what he's given. Obviously the coach always takes the fall in these situations but if whoever they bring in to replace him doesn't have an instant impact, pressure will really start to mount on the front office next season.

Fantastic game last night, topped up with an all time classic moment from Altuve to end the ALCS

Great ninth innings and Altuve again showed how great a player he is with that walk off home run. Let’s hope the WS is a classic

Well that was a microcosm of this season. Umps with a knack for making it all about themselves. Making atrociously bad calls, getting into shouting matches with the dugout and ejecting the manager for rightfully arguing. Been doing it all season. And tonight it comes to ahead in a do or die game in a massive spot. Gurriel made an errant throw, Turner was on the fucking baseline and gets called out of the base paths interfering with the throw(he was not). The Nationals manager, Dave Martinez, who is told to sit down in the dugout due to a bad heart had to get held back from arguing by 3 people and was ejected. Honestly, that guy has a ton of will power because that ump was begging for things to get physical. The ump was legitimately talking shit to the team and manager and wouldnt stop while he was on the phone with the league office(who upheld the abysmal call). And Joe Torre, whose in charge of this shit, just sits there in the front row refusing to look. Loved Joe but ever since he's been in the league office he's proved himself to be a sniveling coward. A disastrous night for baseball. Should be embarrassed. No doubt they'll be praising the umps though. They are very lucky Rendon is an animal. If the Nats lost tonight, things wou;d have gotten real bad for the sport. There would have been a black cloud over this entire season.

It's a joke that umps/refs in every sport get away scot free on everything. They have no accountability at all. Pretty sweet gig.

you're nuts. he was inside the foul line. you have to be in the lane between the foul line and the three foot line. read the rule and watch the replay. whether he interfered with the call is judgement but he wasnt in the lane. Nats fans have been whining like sissies about everything.
