the trouble is, there is no guarantee of the long term prosperity actually happening. with the way the squad is at the moment due to contracts, and seemingly players just playing them out, there is no guarantee they will perform better, or the new man leaves them out, but doesn't get the reaction of those remaining.

the trouble with football and its fans is the fans expect to beat teams that are not the best. I never have expected us to beat anyone when we play them whether it's Liverpool or Watford. I hope we beat them, and do it with a good performance being a bonus. trouble is so many teams come to the lane, and park the bus and make it harder to break them down.

I can understand from a fans perspective why you take that approach. I just wish we had the attitude of United in the 90's/2000's where they were winning games in the tunnel. Shouldn't matter that teams are coming and parking the bus we should be saying we're Tottenham Hotspur, we're the better team and we're going to smash ya bus to bits. More so the players but also the fans to an extent.

I would like to see Poch bring some consistence in his team selection. For one thing it was the 1st time last nights team had played together & whilst they weren't perfect they looked pretty decent for most of it & I'd like to see if it was a one off or something we can build on.

Plus we're already 10 points off top 4 & we're to have any chance of challenging we need to go a hell of run just to get back in touch & to do that we need a consistency in our team selection starting Sat.

I doubt you will see it, Poch rotates to try and prevent burnout, and allows him to do his training sessions.

So you can't congratulate him on a good win tonight which most likely has seen us through to the knockout stage? At least you aren't hiding your agenda driven comments I guess.

Did Eriksen not score tonight? Must have been in my head.

What if Eriksen plays at the weekend and we win? Will you congratulate him then?
Despite his goal against 10 men who had given up .... Eriksen was total pants! Continuously gave the ball away and ruined attacks.

And yet we’re one of the unfittest teams in the league this year.... maybe it’s player apathy. Liverpool, who press way harder than us, rarely rotate. Alexander-Arnold and Robertson are sprinting up and down the flanks for 93 minutes, twice a week, 10 months of the year. Imagine if Klopp changed 3 of their back 4 every other game. They wouldn’t be top of the league. It’s basic stuff, don’t mess with your back 4, that is what is so annoying!

Oh I agree I wished the players had that attitude, which would give the support a lift too.

with the bus parking, that seems to of become a more of the norm the last 2 and a bit seasons, and teams are doing it to us more nowdays, because the 2 seasons we chased Leicester and Chelsea, if they never parked it, we brushed them aside because them not parking made the high press work. now they come to defend, make less errors when pressed and catch us on the counter.

think you need to go check what team Liverpool started with on Tuesday, and when they played them in the reverse 2 weeks ago.

I do agree with the rotation in defence is wrong is too often, and the season we had our best defence we had that terrific run at the end after Rose got ruled out, with Davies our only LB, and we used Toby, Dier and Jan and just rotated Walker and Trippier

I can totally see what Poch is doing with the rotation and also the players that are way out of form.

He is trying to turn the squad into a City, a wel oiled machine where when one player comes in for another it’s seemless.

Problem we have, is that some of those players are so dreadfully out of form, don’t want to be here or have other issues, that it’s counterproductive to what he is trying to achieve by essentially keep setting us up to lose.

I get the best way to get out of form is to play through it, but we have decent players waiting there to come in so there is no need to play them.

Again, I get we might need these players at some point and getting them in form now is better than them coming in half way through the season having not played. But the issue we have is that it won’t really matter if that comes up in Feb/March because we will be out of contention

Hopefully he has set on a system at least, we are so much better in the 4-2-3-1

What a conundrum

He just needs to stop being so stubborn

He has been rotating Milner in as cover for a fullback and utilizing his squad of midfielders for CL games. Plus obviously he played a lot of youngsters for their carabao cup games.

Also Lovren and Gomes have been filling in next to Van Dijk.

I understand that a big part of Poch's philosophy was uniting a squad, making everyone feel part of it and thus rotating regularly.

But there are times you just need to adapt, tweak and try something different when you hit these sticky patches. And let's be honest 'patch' is being generous, very generous.

For me he should of recognised this sometime ago, and we're yet to see if he has now. That's where a lot frustration has come from imo.

Poch has been tremendous up until this bad run, but he has to show he can deviate away from the norm when we're struggling.

Yes it's natural to make changes here and there but I think he should be making few at this time.

Build from this performance and result, and go again. Confidence is infectious and making wholesale changes again will probably lead to a disjointed performance on Saturday, and last night is quickly forgotten.

I just want him to keep it simple for a while to get us going again.

But honestly expect a whole raft of changes again which is counter productive imo.
Good post.

From the outside it appears that Poch spent his first season getting rid of players he didn't want and getting the team together drilling in the need for them to work for absolutely everything.

Now many of the players that have done so well for us, want out and no longer have that desire. It appears he still believes in them and is being loyal to them when he now needs to changes.

You can be too loyal to your players.

There's more chance of seamless rotation if you get the core playing and winning then make one or two changes here and there, not just arbitrarily change half the team because you can. Then cycle through the different areas of rotation, not just change the fullbacks every game, they are capable of playing 2 in a row!

I hope I'm wrong but I feel that once again any momentum from the midweek win will be lost by taking out half of the team for those that are out of form. Whereas if he just took out say Alli for Eriksen then there is more chance of keeping the momentum and then by virtue of that perhaps Eriksen gaining some form.

Saturday is a very big game for him & he must pick the right players, failure to do so & negative result to follow, then i think we shall see louder noises for his exist.

The problem with Poch is he too obsessed with fitness & rotation, which is why we don't have any continuity in the team, ultimately this will cost him his job whenever that may be.

Glad Poch realises that about tomorrow it’s what I’ve been saying and it’s why I fear the fixture. Especially as many in the ground will see the team and names but not the collective (shit I even sound like him!)

Pochettino on Sheffield United
“It is going to be very difficult. They work so hard. What impressed me the most is the belief, the togetherness, spirit like a rugby team that fights for each other, that is fantastic to see in a football team.
“They have a good squad, great organisation, a great manager and I think to fight for each other, they have good players of course, that is the key for Sheffield United and that’s why they are doing so well, with so many points.”

He has played the same back 4 for every league game apart from when Matip is injured. He also plays the same front 3 every league game. Same Keeper too. In fact, he only rarely changes his line up for league games. Wish Poch would take note!

Right, but he can do that because his full backs arent playing 93 mins twice a week for 10 months a year as you have attested.

I think we all wish we had fullbacks in the form and with the fitness levels of Lpool at the moment. I genuinely think if the situation were different he would love to have a settled back 4 for the prem, but with injuries, fitness, and suspensions he just has not had the luxury.

I know we can't read too much into Wednesday's result, but I've had a gut feeling things are slowly slotting into place. We're playing some good football (in patches), some dross as well, but our new signings look really really good. I just sense that we are seeing the beginnings of a climb up the table. We have some serious quality in the team.
