Naughton was OK before he got injured but we don't need OK players.
Dier WILL be a big part of the future. Naughton won't.

True but Dier needs to be playing regularly at CB. Right now he's playing like 2 games a week out of position and it's starting to show. Kid will be worn out by mid-season.

I'm glad Naughton is back, he impressed me before he got injured. He'll get replaced by Yedlin as backup but for now I'd rather he was RB over Dier.

I think Dier is learning a lot more playing at RB than he would be as probable 3rd choice behind Kaboul and Fazio.
Naughton will be gone in January IMO.

That might be true but for me, he has the potential to be a top class CB but only a half decent RB.

He's clearly built like a CB and has done well at times filling it at RB but long term I think he could be one of the first names on the teamsheet in his preferred position.

Who else has been consistently good over that period?

Zabaleta, Ivanovic, Sagna?, Clyne, Coleman, and maybe Bardsley? Naughton is certainly up there.

He's not fit to lace any of their boots. Come on mate, we've let you have your way with this thread, but don't talk filth.

I'm not saying Naughton is as good as any of them (except Bardsley). I'm saying he's been about or near as consistently good for us as they have for their teams. I think you really are drastically underrating how important Naughton stepping up the second half of last season was for us.

Naughton will never be a top RB. But he is good.

No he isn't! He's gone from a league 1 level joke of a player to someone who has held his own without looking like he's tripping over his own feet! Stop hamming it up man!

Whatever. We're not changing each other's minds. I think he is pretty good, you don't. He's probably somewhere in the middle.

I'm pleased for Naughton. He has shown improvement after a shaky start to the season and a woeful 2013/14.

If anything he has proved he has the desire to make it with us, and that is admirable. He appears calmer in possession this year and Poch has been good for him.

I also have sympathy with how often he was played out of position last season and respect that he didn't kick up a lot of fuss.

So in one sense I'd like to take back the tumbleweed post from p1 (even though I used it in very much tongue in cheek!).

However, in another sense, I still think Naughton is just a bit of a 'meh' player and when Walker and Yedlin come back into the squad he'll simply be moved on and that will be that.

Whatever the case, it's good to see him getting a run in his favoured role. He deserves it and if he continues playing as he has been it'll get him a good club when he does finally get sold.

Naughton is not a flashy player like Walker or Yedlin. He is a very solid RB that gets the job done

We only appreciate Naughton once we lose him. Naughton at RB offers us a bit of solidity and stability at the expenses of the attack impetus that Walker would offer us

Dier at the moment is beginning to look a bit lost at RB. He seem not know if he should continue overlap or stay back

Dier is build for CB and looks good as a Jan replacement..ball playing CB

Super impressed with him last night. Looked to cross more than I've seen him do before and was solid in defence. Really happy he's back and fully expect to see him start vs Villa.

Of course he's a "meh" player. It's Kyle Naughton. He's never going to be a cover star for a Fifa game or win many man of the match awards. The fact is he is on low wages, he doesn't kick up any kind of fuss and seems to just get on with the job he's asked to do and he does that job (at RB not LB) solidly. He just seems like a perfect backup player to me. Sure he will probably be shifted on if/when Yedlin comes good and I'll wish him all the best when he does.

I think he's always been a good right back back up option. There's not many clubs have better as their second choice, IMO. The issues came from him being used at LB, almost destroyed him.

And unfortunately it seems a section of people still judge him on his performances at LB.
