Thanks Trix. His salary is a huge ball and chain when it comes to him moving anywhere. At least he has the key even if he is reluctant to use it.

He doesn't want to do a loan and neither do Madrid. Things change and all that but I don't see this as a goer now.
But we have a golf course near...

It’s quite clear that Bale cannot be that unhappy at Madrid as he’s effectively pricing himself out of a move to anyone. Not just us.

I don’t know whether to admire his sheer belligerence at staying there knowing he’s not really wanted because he likes the money and lifestyle, or to think he’s willingly wasting the last few peak years of his career.

Bale's stance makes at least some sense to me. He's settled in Madrid and his family must be happy there, he's making absurd amounts of money to stay in shape and play international football, he's already accomplished essentially all of his career goals, and in a couple years somebody is going to pay him a big signing on fee as a free agent (although his wages will go back to normal levels).

Madrid's position seems absurd. If reports of his wages can be believed they've paid him roughly 15 million euros already this season for 800 minutes of football. Why on earth won't they cut their losses and loan/sell him with a subsidized salary? It's literally money out of their pocket. Are they that worried that Zidane will leave again and the new manager will be smitten with Bale?

How has this thread made it to almost 500 posts?

People, you have better things to do with your lives than this. What happened to all those new year's gym memberships? Walk the dog, go play jenga with the kids, go and make a wicker chair, wear some cords and listen to Dire Straits, pretend it's the 80's - all valid things you could be doing that are more life affirming than this.

Go be the best you (y)

Fit or unfit, he brings a presence to the dressing room / pitch that might tip the balance. That is he’s won trophies. Consistently. Other than Hugo who won a World Cup, we’re massively lacking that with a (mostly) very talented bunch and plenty of potential. Feels like another piece of the jigsaw. Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer judging by ITK. Nevertheless, a week to go... ?

You're giving me more credit than I deserve, I'm sitting in my pants drinking a beer.
I don't have anything better to do!

You've actually made me put Dire Straits on. Shame I don't have cords.

Basically, if Bale would like to play for us again and help us win trophies, he needs to take a pay cut to make it happen. Simple. He's a multi multi multi millionaire, never needs to work again. Why not play for your favourite club, win some cups, be a legend. (it's not like what we'd pay him is pauper's money).

Realistically, head over heart a permanent deal would be a ridiculous risk. 30 years old, injury problems and long contract on eye watering wages. If we can't do a loan i'd steer clear.
