He is my all time favourite player. I first saw him play against Ipswich at the lane, we won 6 - 3 and he didn't even score 1, LOL! A true genius.

To think he retired so early as well, another 4 years at the top and he could have never been surpassed

He never will be.

Only in numbers perhaps, but not in brilliance.

He was an authentic genius.

In my first ever game at WHL he scored a hat-trick against Liverpool. Goals that no ordinary player could dream of scoring, like he so often did. It's no wonder that generations of Spurs supporters have had unattainably high standards having seen him in action. It's no exaggeration to compare him with the only player I have seen who deserves the comparison,Messi. But Jimmy did it in days when defenders were allowed to kick your legs away from you a dozen times a game before getting a finger wagging from the ref. It's a travesty that he isn't more widely recognised as the all-time greatest goalscorer in British football. Jesus I feel old now.

I've nothing against Rooney for example but he's not in the same league, shouldn't ever be mentioned in the same breath, so apologies for doing so.

Jimmy Greaves, you will always be a real football hero.

I got him to sign a shirt (kappa home) which is framed and hanging on my wall. Dads favourite player. Lives round this way I think. Old bloke at my work used to watch him play for Chelmsford city. Clearly the highlight of his career....

My boyhood hero. I cried when we swapped him to WHU for Martin Peters(who was a great player for us). Worst decision Bill Nicholson made. Simply the best goalscorer ever. Part of The G-Men with Alan Gilzean(best header of a ball I've ever seen) It's amazing how little his genius is appreciated( If he'd played for ManU it would be different I'm willing to bet). If he'd been playing today Messi and Ronaldo would be in his shadow and his transfer value would be astronomical.

I have never seen a better striker in a Spurs shirt, and in any British league.

In the top five to have ever played the game in that position.

I was one of the privileged few to have seen the greatest goal ever scored. Many of you will know the one.

Never saw him play but was at one of his talks - one story stood out -

Spurs were playing Liverpool away towards the end of the season and such as our record up there he said it was like a nice day out for the forwards and luckily this afternoon was sunny and all needed otherwise was a deckchair. Greaves said after about 10 minutes the ball came up towards him and he got there just before Tommy Smith flicked it through his legs and shot from distance to give Spurs the lead. Smith who as one mean bastard was a little upset at this and threatened to do some bad things to Jimmy. So Jimmy decided to drop back and play just behind Phil Beal and Mike England for protection and to avoid Smith.

At the end of the game it ended as a draw the team went back to the changing rooms and Jimmy expected a rollicking from Bill for not obeying team instructions. Bill proceeded to praise the side for a great point and got to Jimmy and sung his praises for a great defensive display. He said that as one fhe few times in public that Bill ever praised him when he scored he was just doing his job

On the day he signed for us, I was the first to get his autograph on the steps of the White Hart and in my teens I often stood next to him chatting at the bar. One of the nicest and most modest and genuine men you could ever hope to meet as well as being a footballing genius and truly justifying the title of legend.

I watched him playing tennis and cricket at the old Cheshunt training ground in my school holidays and he was obviously a multi-talented and natural sportsman who could have made his mark in whatever sport he chose to play. He later proved to be an excellent rally driver/navigator too.

Incredibly sad to see how he is now.

I'd forgotten that, Cosmic. I remember the press he attracted in 1970 when, because he wasn't selected for the England World Cup squad, he took part in the Mexico car rally instead.
