Surely there should be a loophole when damages are caused by the track - rather than by the team/driver.It’s pretty disgraceful if you ask me. Makes a mockery of an already poorly run sport.
But, I suppose this is consistent with the penalty if the damage was caused by another on-track driver.
Another interesting side note - I wonder how teams deal with a late-season expense like this when it comes to their budgets/cost caps. Because of Red Bull's dominance, I assume they have plenty of room left under the cap - given they have not had to work as hard on upgrades as other teams. But, I also think a team like Red Bull utilizes as much cap room as they possibly can (or even a little above....)
