Not sorry to see him go but the FA are terrible at choosing managers, they will probably go with Carsley.
He won the euros last year, plays excellent football and knows a lot of the younger players.

It would be very logical. You don't need a big name at International level.

Considering the FA wanted Southgate to stay on regardless makes me believe they will want a continuation in promoting from within so can easily see an underwhelming appointment like Carsley being made.

I just don't think this happens anymore. We weren't beaten by a team on Sunday with a Mourinho-style manager: it was someone who'd worked with the youth ranks and Spain was his first big job. Lionel Scaloni won the World Cup in his first managerial role.

I think the absolute worst thing we could do would be to appoint Tuchel or someone like him, because I think it'll all end in tears. The only upside might be it'll be different to be able to dislike an England manager again.

Yeah, I get the sense that foreign coaches are currently out of favor for the international job, at least in England. I think the FA will prefer a coach who will invest time in nurturing young talent and developing a distinct style and culture, rather than someone brought in for a quick fix to win a tournament and then leave.

Having said that, I still think Poch has an outside chance. Whether he would the job is another question. But Carsley and Potter seem much more likely. And maybe even Lampard and Gerrard.

It was time for Southgate to go because as Einstein said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

This is reflected in the latest betting, given Carsley's odds are shortening.

The FA is run like the Civil Service i.e. promotion from within, continuity at all costs. Yawn bloody yawn.

You don't. You need to be tactically astute, good man manager and good with the press. I wouldn't be upset to see Carsley come in.

I can see them doing that, they look for consistency through youth to senior football now for players and I assume managers (e.g southgate) we tried the foreigner route that didn't work too well so carsley has a good chance imo. Having said that who would want the bother...

Well done to him for uniting the nation in 2018 and bringing a positive vibe back to the team, but things had gone full circle and this tournament felt toxic for many reasons even though we did reach the final. No shame in admitting when you're out of your depth and you've taken a team as far as you can. Make no mistake - he may have got further in competitions than anyone else since 1966, but he has underachieved relative to the crop of players and draws that he's had which other England managers would have killed for.

Can't believe I'm hearing suggestions of a German (or an Argentinian) managing England. The "Scouse not English" lot would go nuts if Klopp took the job. Personally I think there should be rules about managers having the same nationality requirements as players to represent their country. Would be interested to see how Potter or Howe get on.

I don't know enough about Carsley to have an opinion.

But I do agree you don't need to be a great club manager but the fa concern me with all the talk of DNA. What does that even mean? Southgate became as stubborn as anyone in continuing to pick old out of form players. Is the DNA good football because that's something Southgate absolutely did not deliver. It seems to me the DNA means a yes man who is good with the press . Now the England manager absolutely should be good with the press but first and foremost the ideal candidate shouldbe a good football manager.

Id love an England manager to come in with th idea that we're not going to try and be Germany or Spain or even a club like team but we're going to create a team in the spirit of the premier league. Front foot aggressive football with a system that suits the majority of our best players and one that we can integrate new players into.

If that's Carsley great but the fan in me would love Klopp or Howe

Convenient that we're just ignoring Southgate's own role in that.
I think this has been strength, the best international teams have a structure and continuity from youth groups and the manager embraces that. Unfortunately, Southgate is a limited a manager, so whilst he's got one part of the job right that we've never got right in England, he wasn't the required level for the onfield stuff .
