If Kane is going to be dropping deep I think we need someone to move into the centre forward position when he does it. Bellingham would probably be good at this.

Agree. First, I find it unlikely that Southgate would want to make such a significant change to the team for the final.

Additionally, while sentimentality shouldn't be a factor, we have to acknowledge that this is probably Southgate's final tournament and possibly Kane's last as a guaranteed starter. It's likely the end of their journey together, and I would be surprised if Southgate dropped his talisman, captain, and England's greatest-ever goalscorer for what could be the most important match of their careers.

Can't argue with 3 semi finals in last 4 tournaments. That's not luck. That's being a good international manager.
Particularly when you compare other nations record in the same time.

Argentina2018 (Ro16), 2021 (Winners), 2022 (Winners), 2024 (TBD)
France2018 (Winners), 2020 (Ro16), 2022 (Runners Up), 2024 (Semis)
Belgium2018 (Semis), 2020 (Quarters), 2022 (Group Stage), 2024 (Ro16)
Brazil2018 (Quarters), 2021 (Runners Up), 2022 (Quarters), 2024 (Quarters)
Portugal2018 (Ro16), 2020 (Ro16), 2022 (Quarters), 2024 (Quarters)
Netherlands2018 (DNQ), 2020 (Ro16), 2022 (Quarters), 2024 (Semis)
Spain2018 (Ro16), 2020 (Semis), 2022 (Ro16), 2024 (TBD)
Italy2018 (DNQ), 2020 (Winners), 2022 (DNQ), 2024 (Ro16)
Germany2018 (Group Stage), 2020 (Ro16), 2022 (Group Stage), 2024 (Quarters)

I thought Kane looked good first half. Despite the fact he still didn't really have any runners off of him.

Seen a few videos doing the rounds and when the opposition crowd out central areas, Rice is totally in effective.

He doesn't have a picture of what he is going to do when he receives it and is too scared to play through the tiny gaps when they do open up.

Foden, Kane, Bellingham do drop into space and show for the ball but Rice takes a touch, looks up and then decides its too risky so goes back or sideways.

He makes good movement in between and on defender's blindside but then he doesn't have the vision/ability/bravery to try it.

In the PL, he often gets that bit of space to drive forward and he can burst through gaps well or help in transition. And at Arsenal, they have players who can play through and it's not really his role to do that. He's more of a cover ground, move ball on quickly- which he's effective at.

But at International level, it's much more strategic/defensive/technical and less transitions appear so you have to be cuter, which he isn't.

Genuninely think if Wharton and Gray get to the levels we hope they do, Rice will be the removable player.

Gareth Southgate has publically said in an interview that England have to be “tactically perfect” to beat Spain in the final, which does show that is aware of what is needed to beat them the best when it really matters.

Does this mean that he has finally learned and the penny has finally dropped ? Does this his mean he has watched and rewatched our games against Croatia in 2018 in the WC Semi Final and final the 2021 Euros Final against Italy and truly engaged in a critical period of self reflection on what he could have done better tactically in those games when it was clearly evident that the tide was turning against us in those games as we sat back deeper and the inevitable happened the opposition scored when all the warning signs were there ?

I really want to believe he has but that would involve me having to dismiss clear patterns of concerning behaviour on his part in negligently overlooking a glaring selection issue before the tournament even started by knowingly taking one unfit left wing back and 3 fit right wing backs whilst stubbornly playing Trippier in a role that he is ill suited to on the left and which has consistently nullified our attacks down the left and made us look predictable and selected two players in Gomez and Adam Wharton who he’s never used and won’t when he could have brought Tyrick Mitchell a left wing back who ironically plays for Crystal Palace, the club he knows and who Adam Wharton Gehi and Eze plays for.

I would also have to completely dismiss the last 6 games that have got us to this stage against teams far less equipped to do damage against us than Spain where very often he has sat there and waited for things to happen when it’s been obvious that the tide is turning in games as we drop back deeper and the inevitable has happened and we’ve gone a goal behind or the opposition have equalised and we’ve had to rely on absolute worldies and inspirational last gasp moments to get us out of jail or get us over the line.

I live in hope that this he penny has dropped with him but for the reasons mentioned above I have some serious doubts.

"Tactically perfect" means that if you think we've been playing cautiously so far, then you haven't seen anything yet.

We all know there are others that should be dropped before Kane. And Southgate is not going to do that
I never said just kane so dont really get how pointing at other sub par performers helps his case, every player can be benched thats a given.

But this is a spurs forum and we've have our own history with this in finals, so interesting to see the consensus.

Lets hope hes got a bit more movement about him in the final.

Tactically Perfect. That's doublespeak for play well and don't make mistakes.

When we're set up to play positively and lose, i've no problem with that because you can win or lose any given game, but as long as the intent is there and we give it a go. Let's not play in a sterile fashion this weekend please Citizen Southgate.

Have those that felt abit meh about the whole thing come round now .... or anyone still just not feeling it, despite the drama?

Asking for a friend 👀
Still a bit Meh for me. I have no problem with boring football if you don’t have the players for it. However, England could have smashed up this tournament with the players left at home not just the ones out here.

Southgate get some credit for how he’s used the squad and how we were at pens. I think we can win it, not sure Spain are all that at the back. But I’ve struggled to get behind this England team maybe I’m just more spurs than England these days.

People don't seem to want to speak about how bad Rice has been. Passing range has been shocking and he is incapable of protecting the defence effectively.

I think the latter stages of this tournament especially are exposing his limitations. Yes, he's fine and looks solid and competent against third and fourth tier nations in qualifiers, and even the second tier nations in the group stages. But he has a very limited passing range and is getting caught out of position against quick thinking midfields. As Xavi Simons was lining his shot up for the opener the other night from 25 yards, Rice was stranded out on the left wing the other side of the half-way line where he'd lost possession.

He's obviously going to start on Sunday and in fairness this isn't the game in which to try an untested kid, or a new partnership. But going forward it feels like it's time to start thinking about who might be a better fit.

Reminds me of the Champs League Final, Kane does not look fit, he had a back injury going into the Euros, looks like he still has it. Drop him for the final, play Watkins instead to run the Spanish Back four
