Yeah, this has heavy "Oh, it came off the post, hit Pickford on the back of the head and crossed the line!" vibes

Can Trent not play left back?
Walker is experienced enough to drop in there over anyone else with TAA going into RB.
Walker and Gordon could be an interesting combo on the left and could sort out a lot of issues with going forward. Especially with TAA and Saka/palmer on the right

The only player outside of Shaw in this whole squad who has actually played meaningful football at LB is Gomez, yet Southgate won't put him in. What's the point of him being there? And what's the point of playing a game with a whole side of your team out of position?

It's fucking maddening watching this guy ruin this brilliant team.

How is England's starting 11 so consistently leaked the day before? Is it the players? Coaching staff? Southgate?

Everyone talking about how the draw is favourable, like we're not going to fuck it up against Slovakia

I wouldn't laugh too hard. There's every chance we'll fuck it up against yet another team that will employ a low block against us for much of the game.

I'd love to know if there are any odds available on Southgate resigning before Sunak.

P.S. The only likely change for the match, according to the Torygraph at least, will be Mainoo coming in for Gallagher.

Again, I despair. We need to find a place for Palmer or Gordon as well.

Yep I also read this elsewhere - Mainoo will be the only change. Southgate is infuriating - what more do Gordon and Palmer have to do to start.

Not sure if this is my Spurs bias talking, but I’m not crazy about Saka’s comments about playing out of position. I don’t think him moving to LB is the solution either, but it’s unusual for a player to say “Me playing out of position isn’t the solution”, and seems a bit poor to me in the context of a major tournament where the team is struggling to find any rhythm and where we could be going into a knockout game with no fit left-back. If Southgate was considering it, or even was left in need of an auxiliary LB mid-game due to injuries or a red card, if he turned to Saka at LB or anything other than RW in that scenario then the player has pre-emptively undermined him.

For all the positive vibes about this group of players, I don’t find them an easy bunch to like and don’t see many leaders in it.

Look at his heat map from last night - he played Left Wing.

Of course he looked lost.

Against Denmark, he dropped deeper in the 2nd half - and looked lost.

Go back to the 1st game - which was his best - and where he played as a CAM for most of the game.
It was more that looking a little lost for me, he looked pretty half arsed and for a player of his ability, he should be able to affect the game anywhere on the pitch.
His passing was terrible, his take-ons never worked and his off ball work rate was terrible.

I had high hopes for him this tournament but he's probably been the biggest disappointment for me.
Ok, a fair chunk of blame for that falls on Southgate but...

Could see he was knackered for most of the game, he even said so himself. Southgate needed to bring him off.
