All about risks. Man Utd would not have won the league if they didn't spend 24m on a 29 year old who only had 1 year left on his contract. Levy has been awesome for us but if someone like Van Persie wanted to come to us there is no fucking way Levy would spend 24m on him but with him in our side we would have comfortably made the top 3. CL money would have paid for him

The big difference is that ManU can afford to take bigger risks than us. Financially ManU are from another dimension compared to us.

Paper talk was he fell out with the Spaniards at Real - Casillas & Ramos at least.
And Alonso, but I would say that I felt Mourinho was right on this one but Xabi Alonso did say if Jose stayed i will leave

I have no doubt Levy would have paid that much for a player of Van Persie's standing but he wouldn't have come to us or any other team comparable to us so we are forced to look at other players, the kind of players that even Man Utd wouldn't pay that much for.

It doesn't have to be £24m though. Just a bloody good signing between £10m and £20m without having to sell our best players. Villa this year and Isco last year are prime examples. To be fair Dembele could have been considered one but it was from Modric money and we absolutely had to sign a good CM.

If we had signed AVB targets like Willian, Moutinho and Leandro, we could be in debt but these players retains its value and most likely we gotten CL secured.

As compared with Dempsey, Siggy and Ade.... We are now unable to offload plus no UCL....

So it kinds of baffled me when people says AVB targets are crap when the facts points to the opposite.. The transfer committee got it wrong and esp in Jan window. I remembered we got laugh at bidding 6m for Lisandro and bid 8m for Isco.....

So please wake up..... Quality and not quantity.

Agree if we had signed those three we almost certainly have got UCL but we didn't get them and with it top four.
We dont take risks enough IMO we are far too cautious with our money and take far too long to complete deals.

Other way round wasn't it. I though alonso like Jose. There's a video on the BBC website with him praising mourinho.

In fact if some of those players are with us, we could offload them with profits like Isco or Willian.

Lesson learn, young and rated players should worth a risk. Even Moutinho can be sold with decent profit and all this bring us CL and a shot at being league champions...

What's the point of 60k capacity stadium if we can't break the status quo? I think the transfer committee got to take some risk and I don't mean taking players like Dempsey and hope that he becomes RVP overnight.

I still stand by AVB's targets.... All went on with good returns. Penny wise pound foolish.

Just to add, the transfer committee seems to think they did a good job last season..... By raiding mid table teams justifying their decisions.... Maybe they got a good raise for meeting their KPIs... FFS.

there's a fair bit of assumption in the above. "Utd would not have won the league..." etc. They could have spent the money and RVP got injured - they have the resources to cover that; but we don't. Utd were/are able to spend that kinda cash after dominating the league for many many years. "but with him in our side we would have comfortably made the top 3" again - this is not true (of ANY player) just 'cos its said it a bunch of times.

We're building steadily - perhaps we're on the cusp or at the beginning of going on a league winning spree. Levy's financial management has worked very nicely overall so far, bemoaning it just smacks of impatience and sounds... silly.
