Being neutral I feel sorry for Saints here a bit. First they lose their manager and back room team to us then their team of last year is being ripped apart, I can't help feel that they will struggle big time as trying to incorporate so many new signings won't happen over night.....

SSN, feared it was a 3 month layoff but may just be 6 weeks as he doesn't require surgery... All the news sites are running with it too.

Ah yeah, just seen it...he won't be facing us at the end of August then! A plus I guess.

I like this. Some of the best CB's I've seen over the years have played as CM's.

IMO Veljkovic has all the things in his locker to be a star at CB or DM| except maybe height and pace ( I've rarely seen him have to hurry due to his great reading of the game - maybe he can react but he doesn't need to ). So imo maybe he is better suited to be a dm due to his height ( 5' 11'' or 6 '0') but if we can live with a slightly short CB he's aq great prospect - unflappable, great reading of the game, great interception, heading - where do I stop ?!.

So the ITK which suggested we might buy a young but good CB - is probably relating to an experienced CB rather than someone like Milos

I can get on board with this. More 'if your good enough, you're old enough' thinking.
We've done pretty well with youth prospects in recent times, but it's quite rare that we've just empowered a young 'un and run with them; normally they've been relentlessly loaned until someone realised they were 22 and maybe should come back. Hence the situation where people think players like Carroll or Fryers or Mason or suchlike are 'young' and 'need experience' when they're already older than Davies, who nobody will bat an eyelid at if he starts regularly.

Really hope Poch can get on top of this situation & work out quickly if any players from age 17 up are good enough to integrate & do so, but there's always the concern that our sheer squad size will preclude such integration at all but the most minimal level. John Stones is playing regularly, Madrid blooded Varane young. If Vejlkovic is gonna make it, i'd like him firmly in the squad.

Cannavaro was 5'9'.

Many of the best CB's are over 6'0'' but agreed thatr below is not a killer - its just that generally thety need to be very good to make up for a slight lack of height'

IMO Mios Vekjkovic could be a great CB and/or a top class CM - but that's just an opinion.

If we want to debate Milos further can I suggest setting up another thread ?

Understand what you say.

Part of the issue is that in some years we have yoo many academy graduates who might make it to bring them all into the first team - so we have to loan some out.

Another part is that we bring some in like Milos and in order to ensure that they are 'club trained' we need to avoid loaning the out. But others we may buy and immedately loam out for a variety of reasons.

In the case of Milos, I think he's good enough for Spurs and would like tio see him brought through into the first team - but if the coach decides he wants tio loan him out, we fams have no choice although I'd like to understand why. A certain former manager who I won;t name was almost allergic to youngsters and did not want inexperienced youngsers close to the first team - imo a bad attitude but what can fans do,.

Lets take the discussion elsewhere if you wanmt to pursue it !

And it wouldn't be easy to sign players at a fair price when everyone knows you just got big money...who have they sign so far anyway?

Not that many great targets out there. Sadly don't see our defence getting stronger. Hope I'm wrong. We need to keep what we have.

I agree there is not much choice out there and I would love a new CB but our defence should improve though for following reasons.

-Davies signing, I think improvement in that position. Also means depth at LB plus Verts won't have to cover there, which weakens CB position.

-Kaboul is fitter this year (touch wood). He put a run together at end of last year and has done a full pre-season so far.

-Vlad has been here a year, so should be more comfortable.

-Hopefully a manager who can organise them!
