Possibly a couple of the exceptions that prove the rule? Unless you were around at the time, you really can't comprehend just how jaw-dropping signing Ossie and Ricky was.

Zokora was a bit of a comedown.
To be fair Zokora wasn't signed off the back of the World Cup he was well known to us through Damien Comolli who took him to St Etienne. Dumitrescu and Popescu on the other hand....

Exactly.

It's one of the fundamental rules of running a club with any ounce of sanity. Never buy a player after a good World Cup.
And Levy has been known, for somebody who wants to be fiscally responsible, to fuck this rule up every once in a while.

Don't know how much Paulinho's CC affected his price last year, but kind of feels like we overpaid right now. Hopefully that will change in the long run.

I think the most glaringly obvious example of this is Coulibaly, who we bought based on a U17 performance.

Might as well comment: Morata would be a very big coup, but because of that, you'd have to imagine we're down the pecking order of suitors UNLESS we'd guarantee game time.

BUT WHAT'S THIS?

Morata shares an agency with Vertonghen, Dembele, Walker, Falque, Livermore,
Leandro Damaio ( ), Michy Batshuayi ( :woot: ) plus an assortment of stars that often get big moves?

So at least Chief Dan has the inside track to his agency. :)

So are we going to have Falque ring up Morata and rave about his experience with the club?.....that may not be a super great bargaining tool.

I'm not sure anyone really buys players purely based on tournaments anymore anyway. If a kid in Peru can do 12 keepy Uppies scouts in Europe know all about him. Chances are he's been on the radar for the last 5 years.

A good tournament will only really be enhancing a reputation in most cases. And if a player deemed good enough to make a world cup squad based on the last year or two of his career proves he can also handle himself well on the bog occasion against some of the world's best teams and players then it needn't be a bad omen, just something to add to the dossier.

And no-one's going to bid 60m for some unknown striker from North Korea being glimpsed for the first time are they. At worst a good WC might add million or two to the deal.

And I don't know why Zokora is being held up as a bad example, the guy was already well and truly on our radar, cost a third of what we sold Carrick - about 6/7m - for and played 88 times for us, a fifth place and an outstanding performance to help us win our last trophy.

Weren't we linked with him before the CC? His price was his release clause, so would have probably cost us a lot more had he not had this in his contract.
