ā€œWe thought we had more timeā€ translates as we thought we had time to haggle on the price and include some of our unwanted. hope to wear down Wolves and erroneously believed no one else wanted him.

Quite often, we just try and be too clever as a transfer operations team.
ITKā€™s indicate that we have good intentions, scouted and researched targets.
But its insane the amount of times we miss out on opportunities because we try and get fancy with the payment structure and player swaps.
If we simply paid another Ā£5 orĀ£10million for a playerā€¦.and got it doneā€¦we would save money in the long term through increased success and less overall time and resources wasted in the window.
And Ange would get more time to integrate players into squads.

The definition of insanity, season after season.
"if we simply paid another Ā£5 or Ā£10 million for a player"

Lol. its easy to lose sight of this when discussing in football terms, but Ā£5m is a heck of a lot of money. It's not that simple to just offer it.

It seems (from the ITK) like our transfer team have something lined up, so hopefully we get some quick movement either way.

After 20 plus years of the same transfer approach it feels like we donā€™t mind missing out on some of the big deals along the way. As long as weā€™re seen to be trying
Agreed. Missing out on certain targets because of waiting/negotiating to the level they do feels like an accepted consequence rather than anything to be learned from. I donā€™t think theyā€™re naive per se, rather I think they have their way of doing things and they understand the good and the bad that can happen as a result. Still is frustrating of course.

Weā€™ll see if lessons really have been learned or not. Weā€™ve been in a similar situation with palace before, tried to sign zaha for Poch the same summer they sold bolasie. They didnā€™t budge then and I canā€™t see them budging now
Difference is the release clause

Mendes has no affiliation to spurs we messed about with it took to long thought we had time and in the end Chelsea coughed up.
Think Mendes would have hawked Neto around behind our back even if we had agreed a deal like he did with Diaz. It is his job and when Chelsea bit with their offer of a 7 year contract he was only ever going to go there.

People acting like every other club consistently acts in the right way when the truth is that is never the case.

On the earlier itk on locatelli, isn't he a CM?

And that is why Levy is the worst chairman the business. 24 years in the job and still he's learned nothing...
Should we mention you learning nothing about the Levy stuff and posting it in this thread? Come on, leave that out of here.

This thread has taken a bit of weird turn but that seems to be over now so crack on

Not sure why we even bother dealing with Mendes, especially when weā€™re never going to match what heā€™s looking for. Our only chance to get one of his players is when no other club wants the player. We rely on that too many times unfortunately.

On the younger players, had a convo regarding our youth and how well the U18 and 23s done last season. I mentioned a few names and the reply was ā€œthereā€™s a huge transition to take the next step and make it into regular first team, Mikey Moore has the best chanceā€.

TBH I thought a few other names would cement themselves but he wasnā€™t convinced and simply stated ā€œweā€™ll seeā€.

I'm wondering if we approached it cautiously knowing what Menses is about.

There's no way someone like Levy is naive to think Mendes doesn't do this and would not be tauting his player elsewhere.

Perhaps this was all acknowledged (Ange being aware of the likelihood but wanted to try anyway) and weve done the groundwork elsewhere.

I still feel that if your coach is telling you his priority choice is Neto, then you go for it but you make him well aware of the risks. I think Ange will take that on board for future as he isn't someone who suffers twice.

He just had to find out for himself and not have the club block his choice.

If I'm right about that then I think long term it's for the best.
