Anyone want a can of Toby worms reopened?

JJ on Twitter responding to someone saying Levy wants to get rid of Toby.
JJ’s response: “No he doesn’t ?”

I have no idea of how to link it here to show the conversation but it does seem to suggest all may not be lost with Toby.
I really hope so. Holding on to Toby >>> signing De Ligt or similar, IMO.

just so u know, im not dead, i check several times per day(for itk that is, not whether im dead or not), every day, there just isnt any itk elsewhere
If Dov can't find anything then there really must be something big going down for the Club to be this fanatical about leaks.

Fair enough, but I'd like us to put more faith in some of our youth and spend the 150m on 2 top notch players (not Zaha ?). itk have also stated we have the money to spend before player sales, if we sell 4-5 we should be reinvesting that back into the squad

hercs did say we expect to spend around 30-50m more than sales, can't remember if it made the RO. As I mentioned in another thread, to win trophies we can't rely on the youth, we need a strong 25 just to compete for the CoC

Would you rather wait and hopefully get the players we want, or give a full pre season to anyone who may be easily available early on?
The last time we waited we got Llorente and missed out on Balde, year before that we had to fight with Everton to get sissoko and the year before that we made bids for Said Berahino on the last day.

We can't make moves till we sort out Toby and Dembele situation so we might be showing interest in players but till the club is 100% sure Toby is going I doubt anything big happens till then.

Last time we waited until the final two weeks we got -
Sanchez
Gazzaniga
Foyth
Aurier
Llorente
And on the last day of January we got Lucas.

All for reasonable fees. Except maybe Aurier.

Agreed,
Leaving it late does pose risks but to get the bang for the buck it seems we’ll leave it late, I’m easy as long as we bring good players in.

not surprised the ITK suggests we're not up for paying 70m for anyone. With a long contract that's not much if any change out of 100m.
Bleedin Qataris. This window I'm not saying anything about the value of a pre-season. Loads of players at the WC are only gonna get half a pre-season anyway. Deadline day it is- let's hope our man can work it. Could go either way.

And they’ve all taken us to another level.....

Out of those, I'd say that Llorente has been the only useless one. Harsh, but in such that when called upon, he hasn't really added anything we've missed. Serge, whilst a bit poor at times, has had good games. Gazzaniga was superb when needed.

I think the club generally know what they are doing - sometimes you need depth and options where you can get it, and it's a gamble (as we know more than many others) as to whether a well known, expensive player will perform, or whether Joe Bloggs will sign for 50p and be a revelation.

No signing can take you to another level. Two things can take you to another level:
- Spending an inflation-busting amount of money in a short space of time.
OR
- Being a well-run club with a clear plan and a manager with an appropriate philosophy for the club they are at and a strategic approach to buying players that fit that philosophy.

I don’t know of any other way, do you?

If we agree on that then only the second option will do it for us and that is exactly what we are doing.

I despair at people who want easy success and support spurs. Plenty of great clubs like Chelsea or Man City or PSG if you want that.

My team growing up and first love was Inter Milan. I look at them now all flushed with cash and slinking 30/40m on players left right and centre. Is that what you would like ?

This season they’ve signed Lautaro Martinez, a great young Argentinian striker for £23m. To play up from with icardi presumably. But the only tactic that’s worked under Spalletti is a 4231. Now they’re going 2 up front ? good luck. Spalletti has never played 2 up front ...

But maybe it’s inters fantastic big money signings you’d like to emulate (and not the lack of strategy).

Two years ago under new Chinese owners Inter spent 159m - the kind of money so many would like to see spent by spurs.

- Joao Mario 40m
- Gabriel Barbosa 30m
- candreva 22m
- Jovetic 13.5m
- Ansaldi 10.5m
- Banega free

116m on junk that didn’t work in a rudderless team without a plan. Clueless.

Best signings that season ? Brozovic (5m) and Miranda (9m).

If Inter had spent 14m that season then fans would have complained. But just in transfer fees they could have invested 116m on the academy and not been worse off (let alone agent fees and wages ..!).

Spurs have a plan and a great coach and will find players that fit into that and you don’t need to spend the earth.

Ironically Leicester won the league yet in the abscence of the factors you mentioned it has not taken them to another level!
