Best thing about getting Baldini in is that he's someone AVB has wanted as Technical Director for a while, which suggests AVB will be sticking around for a bit. Hopefully he can see his project coming together.

Fingers crossed Levy doesn't say: "I got you Baldini, just like you wanted, but now you'll have to compromise on signings." Can't see this being the case though as Baldini wouldn't join if he wasn't going to be trusted to bring in players.

I reckon before Baldini came he would have been told that he'd have 'x' amount of money to spend (hopefully a lot!!!) and this is what would sway him

Who would join as a DOF without knowing how much their budget was? And if it wasn't satisfactory, who would sign the contract?

Therefore if (and we have been led to believe he will) he does sign, it would signal the fact we have a decent budget to spend this window.

The unfortunate part of the club we support is that we don't have the finances these other clubs have. Which is why we keep on saying, "they almost...".

Whats been our +/- for transfers in and out cost wise? After 3 signings that stick in my mind, I don't see us taking chances with money any time soon (Pav, Bent, and Bentley). Those three signings are very reminiscent of Liverpool's transfers in the last few seasons.

We've typically spend about 20 million more than we sell.

Take that as a rough guide.

But what it masks is that the sells in 2011 and 2012 almost all lost money (Keane, Pavs, Charlie, Wilson, Hutton, Bassong, Bent (until the sell-on)). So while we actually sold 27 million more than we bought in 2011, a lot of that was based on player investments that went poorly. So while we selling players, we were selling them at a big loss. And that loss had to be covered, which it was by a few years of even spending.

Before that we tended to make money more often than not, on sales. And that era of making a profit began around 2004. Before that there was losses on players at the same kind of rate.

As Levy finally shed the players that he inherited when he bought (a period where sales led to loss of investment), he started turning a profit on most players. This lasted until the Comolli era and Rocha. Then from that point through Harry's first winter, most of our players were sold at a loss. And Berbatov and Modric kind of covered all the attrition in player value. Most of Harry's purchases after that winter window have been profits (Bassong being the exception).

So I think Levy feels like he has almost righted the ship of the tumultuous era (and he's to blame for a lot of that) and can now give up some of the control he needed to stop that less obvious source of bleed. He is still going to lose money on Bentley and Gomes.

You answered the question I was fishing for. Thank you kind sir.

As for everyone else, this is about that time where Neil Eatson drops a note to put the forums in a blaze.... I sense some news in the future....

Well that was a riveting ten pages.

One highlight was seeing chinaman conjure up the image of a combination of Rasiak and Postiga.

I'm now going to wash my eyes out with steel wool before getting blind drunk to block out the memory. Just for good measure, I'll blow my brains out with a sawn off shotgun to make sure I never imagine that atrocity again!

There's some interesting stuff being mentioned in the Bernard thread... Comes from the "other place" though so might cause infections.
