This notion, also propagated by some on this forum, that quality players will somehow be cheaper towards the latter part of the window, is no longer true. Teams within the Premier League, especially, are loathe to sell quality for knock down prices. We've seen this with a relegated Newcastle side demanding a massive fee for Sissoko. We've seen it with West Brom refusing to sell Berahino on our terms. We've seen other top clubs like Chelsea (David Luiz and Marcos Alonso) and Arsenal (Shodkran Mustafi) pay large deadline day fees for players they needed to plug holes in their squad.

Unless it's a pure release clause deal like Dembele or Son were, a loan deal for a surplus player on a big wage (we rarely go for those), or we are dealing with a wantaway younger player from abroad on a contract running down, we're going to find signing players difficult if we wait until the last few days of the window. I don't think Everton will sell Barkley, nor will Bournemouth sell King, on Levy's terms at the end of the window.

Our smartest strategy would be to focus on players with release clauses and contracts running down abroad. Pereira, Seri and Keita Balde are all going to be on the move and can collectively be had for fees that match what we've sold others for this summer. Their wage demands will be within our structure. If we signed those three players, we'd be an excellent shape moving forward.

Even smarter is to be courting the players with a year left!

Some great lines from some chairman-wannabes in here.

Ha. The "I'd do it this way" mob. Not a clue between you of what it takes to run an international multi-million pound business.
Some would say the same about Daniel Levy. Leaving aside his "brinksmanship" in the transfer market I'm not overly impressed with his performance on the stadium. I still don't understand how the cost has supposedly doubled, if it is related to the fall in Sterling then he really shouldn't be running the club. As concerning is that he still hasn't lined up the stadium naming rights which should in the current market fund a very large chunk of the stadium cost. I'm not a Levy hater and think he is probably the most astute Chairman in the league but that doesn't make him immune to criticism and as SC is a fans forum it shouldn't shock anyone when fans express their opinions as to how the club is run. Personally I find the "all is great don't criticise Levy or Poch mob" antithetical to the very notion of a forum like SC. Peace out.

This is a forum. Deal with it.

In fairness I don't see him mentioning any form of censorship or lack of right for people to express their views that he clearly doesn't agree with.

If anything, he is as you say already 'dealing with it' and utilising this website as a free 'forum', exercising his right to express that he thinks certain people are talking complete crap.

I think the the rubber band has officially snapped, seemed to have a bit of good news at a time where we sort of needed it and now it has back tracked at the wrong time in a window we need to be making moves

And this is why some were sceptical over the Walker deal, which in the end is only as good a deal as the deals it ends up facilitating. It was very optimistic to think that 50m would be quickly and precisely reinvested, instead we lost a first XI player to a rival and are not seemingly close to reinforcing ourselves with the proceeds.

I'd be amazed if we sign anyone but the GK on Monday.
I've been trying to blast this trumpet this since that Monday news popped. A lot of people trying to shuffle cards with tarrot cards and crisps and get a single story. Maybe people's desperation, fantasy memories of VDV, and what they think Spurs are vs what they really are quite the divide.

The previous ITK pointed towards something being imminent the latest is suggesting we still don't really know who we want or what the quality of the player will be.

On the one hand we have a fantastic first team, one of the best attacking trios in league, in my opinion the best CB duo and best CM duo. Add to this Son, the best LB in the league and a rising Winks. On the other hand though our squad beyond those is bare, filled with youth players.

We are in such a weird position, we don't need to improve the first team at all but we are absolutely desperate for 2 or 3 squad players. I just can't get my head around why it's so hard to bring in a couple of good players (all we needed) before the season started. This summer was the easiest summer in terms of what we needed to do but it's quickly turning into seemingly the most difficult.

The only explanation I can come up with is because the funds are so tight and we do need maybe 3 players we're almost scared to spend on a player until we're 100% certain they're going to be good enough to improve our squad. If we have missed out on top targets and the way prices have gone the next bunch could all be 'risks' if we were only willing to spend about 20m on each player.
It's very frustrating though and it's gotten to point where we've got to just take that punt because with the injuries we look very light.

Surely the explanation is that players good enough for our squad are going for 50m and wages above our highest earner, so we need to wait for this madness to die down a bit and then make our moves. I agree its frustrating but I can't see that it's a great mystery why we are having difficulty doing what we need to do

We will be waiting well beyond this transfer window to do any business if that's the case as the madness is not dying down. PSG money spent on Neymar will have a ripple down effect. They'll reinvest in Coutinho, Liverpool splashes on someone like Van Dijk, Southampton will take that money any pay over the odds for another player and so on. Prices will continue to be high. This is a transfer market Levy will have to learn to deal with or we just won't do much business going forward.

Looking forward to last week of transfer window..... for a few gambles.
It's criminal not to add quality for champions league. This stadium excuse is just boring

I am sure other clubs have the ebb and flows of ITK during the window, but being a Spurs fan for the past 10 years and being on these boards for 6ish, I have a feeling we deal with the most bi-polar of emotions.

I feel for you guys cause we get our hopes up all the time and then the truth hits and we end up with Sissoko, Stambouli and the like.

We have a history of great buys and we, like most clubs, hit or miss quite often, but man these past couple years have been real hard.

With that being said, I think it is best to be positive and not flog the lot at the top cause we really have no clue what is going on with the financial situation.

Our chairman has occasionally cocked things up, but if we are that inept can someone explain to me how several sides with bigger budgets and big outlays finish behind us, and spend time trying to buy our players. We are so lucky!

A discussion on the merits of Daniel Levy. How refreshing!

It's just what we've been lacking on SC :D
