I don't mind getting Rodwell, as long as there is assurance that his injury situation has improved and is training well.

Having said that, I would be happier had we bid for Richards instead. He would be a real good competition or even upgrade on Walker

Well it seems to me the issue is replacing a body in central midfield after Sandro goes, and in particular one who can play defensive mid.

Wouldn't Schneiderlin be the obvious choice?

Oh for certain, but as I said just a few posts above I think the club is at least feeling out their options if Saints are intent to play hardball or refuse altogether.

I suppose, personally I think we'd just keep Sandro if we can't get Schneiderlin. Rodwell is such a poor replacement, probably either one of Sherwood's old targets or an agent trying to get some buzz.

Well the notice of a bid came through an ITKer, not a media link, so I'm not sure we can as easily dispel it as agent buzz or an old target as per usual. And again, I think the fact he's a homegrown factors in considering we have so many non-HG senior players and likely intend to bring in at least one more.

I also don't think we're trying to push Sandro out.

Last year we were linked to some Bulgarian Bale who then signed a contract in the summer for a move to a German club in January. Never seen it happening in the EPL before though
German clubs often seem to get business done before the windows ever open. Signing a player in one window to be added in another seems strange though, unless a loan is involved.

Exactly, why would we replace Sandro with Rodwell ?
If Sandro goes, then its most likely Schneiderlin or vice versa.

Rodwell could be brought in if we think of loaning or selling likes of Mason, Carroll, Capoue, Holtby or Bentaleb. But then question is Rodwell any better than all these mentioned here ?

But this is assuming A) Sandro is only going because Schneiderlin is being targeted, and B) Schneiderlin will absolutely work out. It seems likely that he will be brought through in the end, but I'm sure the club is at least exploring other options. Rodwell would, like Schneiderlin, be able to provide the versatility to play both CDM and alongside the CDM.

Point is Rodwell is a promising player coming out from injury & lack of games while Schneirlin is the best defensive CM in the league for 2 year running. Rodwell can't be compared to Schneiderlin's class IMO. On other hand, Schneiderlin is better than a injury prone Sandro.

If the names coming up are true, then it looks like there are two (coherent) transfer strategies in play:
1) sign the players needed to cover known gaps in the system (ideally proven in the PL and known to Poch)
2) sign young players for the future but who have the potential to break through this season
These are in tandem with assessing the current squad and trimming out the players with no long term future.
Sounds like a manager and DOF working together with a clear vision. Very much like the view Enic have wanted for a while - and like Soton 12 months ago.

Oh don't worry my friend, the last thing I'm trying to suggest is that Rodwell would be a better option than Schneiderlin, or even comparable to him. I'm only pointing out possible underlying rationale as to why the club may have lobbied the bid, if it's true that they did.

Jack Rodwell is an excellent player that has been plagued with injuries. I have no idea about the exact nature of them and his current state. So it could either be a stroke of genius or another frustrating one.

Worth a roll of the dice in my opinion.

Agree, even with the few moves that have been made in and out, the squad is a lot more balanced. Would be nice too upgrade quality in a few areas (cb & lwf) and loan out the youngsters. BAE is only real deadwood on decent wages, if no one else brought in.

Very encouraging to hear that Levy, Baldini and Broomfield are working well together. Fits in with what you have said as well about strategies. Long May it continue!

Some of you are talking like this is gospel. The secret pages of the bible that have long been tucked away inside The Jockstrap of Turin and only discovered by scientists during a routine carbon dating test to determine wether Jesus bought his kecks from Marcus and Spencius or Calvinus Klein.

This Rodwell stuff comes from a guy that hasn't given info for about a hundred years and has no real track record to speak of. There's not an inkling of it coming through via anyone else. Now that's not to say it isn't true, but you'd save yourselves a lot of bewilderment, confusion and the tooing and fro-ing of pointless posts if you simply applied the required dose of salt and saved worrying about it too much until either A: It happens or B: We get similar info from a recognised ITK.

It was also in the Sun two weeks ago so I think we can treat it as gospel

Salt added. So much so that my palate resembles the Dead Sea. Still, the golden rule of ITK is to take what you want to believe and run with it! I am happy to believe that there is a coherent plan in place and that we are assembling a team that will be great to watch next season under a manager who seems to like one touch, fast, flowing play. Jack Rodwell is a perfect foil to make Soton think we are looking at plan B as regards MS - sure he cannot be plan A though!

Just woke up to the Rodwell news, an awful start to the day

The guy is the next Michael Johnson, in a couple of years he will be retired and pictured walking around beaches looking like the michelin man, Rodwell has talent but is injury prone to put it mildly and has no application

Just like Michael Johnson
