The crazy thing is that if the October date is true, we actually offered him the top whack for a PL defender at the time (as it was before VVD moved).

As far as I could tell last time I looked the top 6 PL clubs pay their top CBs in the £100-120k region.

For Spurs to go for that was a pretty big deal, and for him to then go back and ask for an increase of £80k on the agreed amount (2/3rds of the original offer more!) I can understand where Levy stood. Add to that the injury and Sanchez stepping up and it makes a lot more sense...

Honestly, I think the original negotiation may not have been in good faith. Throw a number out there that you don't think the club will accept.

I standby Poch & Levy decision making in general on the 'project' in last 4 years. But sometimes, these decisions which is based on their ideology is proving detriment to progress of the club: Poch not selecting Toby in cup semis & Levy showing hypocrisy when someone other than him is moving the goal post.

We have arguably the best CB in the league and we are going to lose him because our club cant come to terms with current market situation. Instead of going from strength to strength, we are again rebuilding. This is not sustainable because players will figure it out that, to get out to richer club, all they need to do is to throw the toys out of the pram.
There’s no hypocrisy. They way you deal with other clubs Is always going to be different to the way we deal with players. When has Levy fucked around in contract negotiations since Poch arrived?.

Also, asking for an additional 4.1 per season (12-16 mill lifetime) is a lot cheekier than anything Levy has ever done, especially because the implications of the club accepting it are as clear as day.

I have no problem with this moral stand. I have been supporting it since the AVB & Sherwoood season.

But lets be honest : If we take this line, we have to prepare ourselves for the longhaul of waiting years to win the PL. At the very minimum, we cannot sell these players to PL club. But if we do sell Toby like Walker to a PL club, gap to the likes of City will only grow ;we will really be the next Arsenal interms of fighting just for 4th and going no further.

You just can't pay a CB 200k a week, especially for 1 that might now suffer continuous injuries. I doubt there are any CB in the country that get much over the 120k he was offered

Totally agree with the club's stance on this. Toby was taking the piss clearly. What I disagree with though is that we're seemingly happy to let him go to United now he's not signing the new deal.

United won't pay him £200k a week. Valencia is their top earning defender on £100k

Do any of you think that Levy doesn’t do anything like what Toby’s done? How much would we have to spend to find a CB as good as him ?

Disagree. If we replace Toby with a player like De Ligt who is already top class and about 10 years younger, then we are certainly not going to be surpassed. If anything it gives us the chance to grow further.

de Light is a wonderful talent but he isn't a Toby and won't be for a few years yet. Toby brings a lot to the team apart from just defensive duties. His long range passing, his attacking quality at corners, his intelligent reading of the game from CD. The young Ajax lad is a fine footballer but I think you are getting ahead of yourself.

I've heard some suggest that because we offer the most generous incentives in the Premier League, when players aren't getting playing time and their take home earnings significantly drop, it reminds them of what they could be earning elsewhere without the incentives complicating their wages. This in turn leads to discontent over their situation, particularly from an older player who may only have one or two contracts left in their career.

Yeah, I can understand Toby's utter dismay at taking only 50k a week (if that's accurate) whilst injured, must completely soul destroying earning almost twice the average annual a income of rest of ghe country, per fucking WEEK!!!!
