Did Defoe not say that he wants to finish his career with us not so long ago?

I for one want him to stay, lest we forget we only have two senior strikers at the moment. Even with Villa coming in I wouldn't think that we should get rid. We need squad depth, Defoe can give whoever a rest for the smaller games like the league cup et al.

Something that hurt us last year was having the same players being run in to the ground each and every week. We should keep him, if only to lighten the load on our main forward.

I guess re: Defoe is that in the end, it really only matters what AVB wants. If he wants him around, so be it. If he doesn't, good luck at your next club and thanks for what you did for us.

Problem is Defoe won't accept sitting on the bench, nor should he as his age, especially in a world cup year. And lets be honest if another striker comes in Defoe will be third choice as Adebayor fits our formation much better.

I find it slightly perverse how we scream for loyalty from our players and management yet show very little loyalty or respect to some of our players in return. I know there's no room for sentiment in football but Defoe is our joint 7th all time top scorer so a little respect wouldn't be too much to ask.

To be honest though, Defoe has been here the best part of a decade and never established himself as first choice. He's got his goal tally through endurance, rather than ever fulfilling his potential.

He also scooted off to Portsmouth the last time his chips were down, and has agitated for a move pretty much every time Keane/Pav/vdV were keeping him on the bench for extended periods.
Gazump.

How can such a beautiful word fill me with such dread?

It's a yiddish word/concept, so the very idea should fill the small-minded thugs at Chelsea with disgust.

Defoe didn't agitate a move to Portsmouth (as such) he was in the last 2 years of his contract and Levy told him to sign a new one or he'd be sold (he didn't want another Sol Campbell) so he went to Portsmouth.

Just went for a drink with my mate who works at Spurs. I've mentioned his job role before but maybe it's best if I don't from now on. Anyway a few interesting bits to tell you guys.

Starting with the youngsters. He said we have some fantastic young players coming through but are still 3-4 years away from breaking through. Singled out Joshua Onomah as the best player we have in our academy. In fact he said he's the best player he's seen at that age group.

Rates Carrol very highly for technical ability but said he's too light weight and needs to build himself up.

My mate watches the first team train 3 times per week. I asked if AVB takes full control and he said he's a very motivational manager/coach. He's famous for saying Tik Tik Tik Tik. Basically keep the ball moving

They've been abroad with the academy quite a few times and again he rates the German teams as the best! Technically very good and their system is always spot on at all age groups.

Steve Mclaren (yes that idiot) was invited to our training ground for a 2 day course. He explained how the German teams train and how they are more tactical and advanced with training methods.

Spurs spent 200k on equipment that players wear during training and matches which monitors all their levels. As soon as AVB arrived that was all taken away! He believes in watching and judging every player by the eye not using computers. However Scott Parker insists on wearing the monitoring equipment and is the hardest working player at training.

He mentioned that Holtby is a bastard to the youth players. When they play a training match holtby will smash through all the youngsters simply because they're playing in his position! Personally I love that :)

All the players don't like ADE. They think he's an absolute clown and players are always annoyed with him in training because he gives the ball away and doesn't try.

He did mention a couple more shocking things but i can't really share but have passed on to the mods.

Anyway not amazing info but interesting.
He's invited me to go watch a training session with them in the next few weeks. Pre season starts July 1st. He said he'll get me security clearance and show me around the training centre. Obviously ill try and take as many pics as possible.

Lovely stuff, thanks for sharing. Always fascinating to read posts like this - it's like peaking behind the curtain. Of course I am most intrigued by the "more shocking things" that you can't share, but understand that you can't blurt everything!

Intriguing thing for me is about AVB negative affinity towards technical gizmos. How wrong were media & explayers who wrongly stereotyped AVB to be a introvert manager taking a scientific approach and called him DVD man whenever possible...

Yep I always thought AVB was into his gizmos! But maybe that's only when explaining tactics etc not the fitness side of things.

I forgot to mention AVB works a lot on team shape and where players should be standing for throws and corners etc. Sometimes take up a whole training session to perfect positioning.

That makes sense about positioning. I remember when Utd scored against us last year we we're at 6s and 7s and it looked like for the first time in weeks we weren't in solid position, it was so incongruous with what we had been doing.
Regarding no technology, i'm sure Andre came out and said that mid-season and most people were surprised & wondered if he was putting them away.

When I did the stadium tour the guides said AVB had installed more TV screens to go over certain tactics etc

He should also tell them they can also move when the ball is in play.
