There was a mental element but we are excellent at handling this and Winks has IMO one of the top mentalities in the squad. See Lamela for parallels.
I really like your use of the word "was"!

On one level, I'd really like to see us succeed with signing no-one and having the likes of Edwards, CCV, Winks, Onomah et al absolutely tear it up.

This would be delicious. The melts on BT and Sky continue to doubt the effect Poch has on young players.

In regards to the ITK, thanks for all the info. Hope we can get a CM to replace Dembele if and when he departs. Sad to see him leave but he looked half the player he was last season in the World Cup

Love the @rebrab info, cheers mate.

Amazed at the amount of people for whom net spend is still an indicator of a successful window.

Net spend alone is never an indicator of a successful window, but if you have to balance the books every year then you are, inevitably, more restricted in what you can do. Clearly, the more you have the more you can do with it. We’ve generally done well within the constraints applied up to this point, so you’d hope that with more freedom to spend we could do even more.

When people talk about wanting to see a net spend, what they mean (I hope) is that they want to see more investment from the club in the transfer market. If we can make £50m and spend £50m, fine. If we make £50m and spend £100m (assuming it’s spent well) then that is better, provided we can afford it and don’t lose out in other more important ways.

I wonder how the footballing world perceives us as we squeeze every last drop out of the Aston Villa carcass

It’s all well and good saying don’t blame Villa but they have nobody but themselves to blame for the state they are in after over a decade of constant mismanagement. They paid £10m for Nigel Reo Coker for fuck sake.

As a capitalist I fully support us in taking full advantage of their situation.
