Quite doom and gloom.

I'd say we'd be better off keeping our powder dry. Don't really need a player coming in that we won't be able to shift in a couple of years.

If true I like the idea of trying to get someone like Koman or Chiesa on loan.

Edit - also I'd argue we don't need someone better as such but more someone with a different profile. Brennan is great but not someone that will keep the ball, beat someone in a tight space and find a pass. Too many of our wingers want to run away from the ball.

Still trying for a winger but getting one of the top few names on our list has proven to be more difficult than anticipated. As I mentioned in a post a few days ago, if there isn't a breakthrough in negotiations with one of the two players we believe are significant upgrades, we'll be faced with the decision of either spending significant money on a player who may be somewhere between 0 and 10% better than what we have, or keeping our financial powder dry until January in the hope that someone higher up the list shakes loose.
My money is on the latter. Just feels like will take too long

Oh. That's not as positive as I'd have liked. No point spending big on a limited improvement. Shame. The winger was the most important piece of the puzzle. Not getting Neto in will really hurt

I'd be majorly concerned if we didn't manage to bring in a right winger now. January is an even worse/more difficult time to buy a key player.

Think many of us were starting to think that things hadn't gone to plan behind the scenes.

Personally don't think there will be much of an excuse not to have strengthened significantly on the wing this window. We have known that should be a priority priority for months and months.

Let's hope for a breakthrough.

I always think it's best to wait for the right player, despite the lack of short term upgrade. It's what Liverpool did with both Van Dijk and Alisson. People will probably come back and say that the back up could be a Van de Ven or Kulu, but they were both more than a 10% upgrade and I'm sure were actual back up choice (maybe even in fact first in the case of VdV), not further down the list, which is what this sounds like.

I'm hoping @What Lies Beneath's disagree here is because this isn't correct.

Otherwise sounds like some of the same old problems, which is what the current situation does feel like.

It’s only difficult because we make it difficult

Ruh roh. I do tend to agree with the thinking that it's better to hold off for someone who is going to substantially improve the team, but at the same token, it's an indictment of our failures to get that /those player(s) in who can improve us.

It’s hard to tell if the ITK is referring to convincing players or selling clubs.

However, would be quite bizarre to me that we can’t afford a top quality option right now. The ITK strongly implies that we’re only willing to move if we can get a value deal which is hugely disappointing and not really surprising. We haven’t spent an enormous amount this summer. If the player is a significant upgrade and the selling club aren’t asking for 9 figures then just pay what’s necessary? The key two words here are “significant upgrade”.

I agree with that. I mean the season kicks off this weekend FFS.

No time for anyone to buy a replacement. In a sense I'm not that surprised by the news. It's just a bit disappointing. So much for the "very confident we can get the alternative over the line" stuff. What are these guys doing? This looks like a bit of a mess.

Seems like Ange wanted a striker - fine, he's got one. But the lack of really good options in AM and wing is going to hurt us this year IMO, unless we get really lucky with Moore or Johnson coming good.

Let's just hope we learn how to defend this year

If we can't get a player in that position that significantly strengthens us right now then better to wait and save the cash till a time we can actually do a deal. It sucks for now but in the longer term it would be the right decision.
