Carlos Tévez has rocked Manchester City by submitting a formal transfer request. The club captain and leading scorer is adamant that he wants to quit Eastlands after growing disenchanted with the management.

The 26 year-old, who signed a five-year contract on his arrival from Manchester United in July 2009, has struggled to build a relationship with chief executive Garry Cook and manager Roberto Mancini since the sacking of Mark Hughes last year.

It is understood that the written transfer request was submitted several days ago and ahead of Saturday’s 3-1 victory over West Ham United, which Tevez missed through suspension, and which lifted the club to second in the Premier League table.

The revelation that their leading player and figurehead wants to now quit exposes the tensions at City and will be a severe test for Mancini.

Tevez has been a pivotal figure in for City’s ascent this season, scoring 10 goals, but several factors have been playing on his mind throughout this campaign. The difficulties he has had with Mancini have been evident for some time and erupted in public after he was substituted recently against Birmingham City and then against Bolton Wanderers last week.

Tevez has a great deal of respect for the club’s owner Sheikh Mansour, with whom he gets on well, and the supporters but has struggled with the management. He met with Mancini and made clear his unhappiness at the Italian’s perceived aloof style and the way in which it is felt that some key players have been frozen out of the team.

According to sources, Tevez’s decision has nothing to do with money – he is already one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League – and if he was put for sale there would be a clamour from some of Europe’s leading clubs to sign him.

Real Madrid tried to sign him before he was sold to City and Chelsea have also been strongly interested in the past – and would be again - as have Barcelona.

But it is understood that he is now so determined to leave City that he is genuinely considering retiring from football.

There have been no indications yet whether City are prepared to let him go although it would be unthinkable that such a key player would be permitted to depart, especially with the season so delicately balanced. City would also face a huge backlash from their supporters over the popular striker.

However Tevez, who has scored 33 goals in 50 league appearances for City, is an extremely single-minded man and also someone who has been dealing with several personal off-the-field issues. He recently admitted that he is desperately missing his children, who are back in Argentina, and his home and has spoken about retiring early from the game.

It is also believed at the club that Tevez has been considering his future for some time.

One of tomorrows papers has broken the story, heres hoping its true. hes by far their best player with 39 goals in 60 games.

Just dont know where he'll end up, who has the cash for him? italian clubs are short of cash although maybe inter might to ignite their season but madrid wont, barca dont have the cash or room for him, bayern? hmm doubtful

Just great news that their in such shit shape in terms of team spirit etc hopefully this gets well dragged out

If he goes back to Boca then fair enough, I can't see that happening due to Boca being broke and Citeh obviously wanting big money. But if he just pisses off to Chelski, Real or Barca then he is just the money grabbing bastard I said he was when he went to Citeh. Joorabchian is the man who pulls the strings and I guess he fancies another massive pay day.

Tevez to Real, Benzema to us

I don't think that Tevez leaving City for anyone would be "money-grabbing", maybe he's just realised that he's made a mistake. He's only human.

If I was Harry, I would tell ossie to put a good word in, no harm in trying,

I dont think he is money grabbing, he just to play and enjoy football imo which he isn't doing under mancini but his agent sounds like a wanker

this will blow over pretty quickly

where would he go? Madrid possibly but would City sell to what they would classify as a rival in terms of where they want to be. Same with FCB.

He will stay at City

Probably right.

I'd love him just to retire though as that is what he has said he wants to do.

Really? That's the worst thing IMO, he's a special player, why would you want the sport to be deprived of such a talent?
