Doesn't one benefit the other in this case?

Sure, but I just don't think Poch would view it that way. He's much more calculated in his approach, and will be focused on the City team rather than their coach.

Pochettino is not going to give Winks his full debut away at a hostile environment in a Champions League tie no less - ain't gonna happen and nor should it.

He gave him his full debut against Gillingham so you are right there.

Pochettino gave Mason his full debut away at Arsenal, used Omomah late against Liverpool and trusted Winks in a hostile environment at the weekend. I think he's one of those coaches who wants players to play in tough situations so they get used to them and develop rather than minutes where nothing is at stake. We will see.

Wonder if Edwards has travelled, surely cant just rely on GNK to be our only attacking change on the bench (plus onomah but he isnt really a game changer at this stage)

Potential 'attacking' subs if he plays the line up i think: Carroll, Winks, Onomah, GKN... :cautious:

Edwards will be out there. The youth team will be playing CSKA youth team in the Champions Youth League earlier in the day.

I see your point.

But Winks' full debut cam against Gillingham last week.

Meant full European debut sorry - in any case, a rather significant step up from a 3rd round league cup home tie against a struggling outfit to CSKA Moscow away in the Champions League.

I'll flip this by saying if Poch indeed surprises me and picks one (or very unlikely both) then who are the high profile casualties?

if winks plays then it'd be alli or lamela dropping out - he won't play though so it's irrelevant really.

That was more of an exception. What you are talking about is essentially throwing the competition away. If Poch sends out that team, we lose and thus find ourselves unlikely to get out the group it would be unforgivable.

I very much am not talking about that at all. I happen to think that Onomah is a better footballer between the two boxes than Alli is. I also happen to think that Winks is also a very good, dynamic and metronomic little footballer and pair those two with Wanyama protecting in the middle and I very much like that CM3 - I would happily see that CM3 any game and not fear it letting us down.

There has to be some rotation, we are not going to get through a whole season unless we are clever and rotate from the get go and use this squad properly, or we'll burn out, and the league has to remain the ultimate priority . This is a long trip to - potentially - the weakest team in our group, Wimmer has proven he's an adequate player, CCV has got to get games somewhere. Janssen has to play. I don't rate Sissoko but put him in because I'd rather Lamela plays against City and thought that with that line up we could maybe be a bit more pragmatic and use Sissoko and Nkoudou to counter.

The bottom line is I do not see players like Winks and Onomah, when played in a CM3 with Wanyama, as a risk. And I do not see how playing two players we paid 40+m for as AM's can be seen as bonkers in a game like this.

Maybe, CCV is the only one I'd worry about, we could risk one of the first choice CB's, but we can't keep risking both twice a week until March.

Not wetting myself, but it was clear from the minute they limped off that it wasn't cramp. Not sure why Poch diagnosed it as cramp originally.

Not moaning, just an observation.
respectfully, it sounds like a moan. Poch thought it was cramp - reasonable. It wasn't - stuff happens

What easy group you talking about? There are no such thing as an easy group in this competition.

I said such an easy CL group. For a Champion's League group there is no doubt we've been given an easy one in the scheme of things, especially considering we were 3rd seed.

I think people are seriously underestimating CSKA at home. Almost all Eastern European teams are very tricky at home and awful travellers.

It's not like we can even afford a defeat. Lose tommorow and we are as good as out.

Big blow that Dier and Dembele aren't fit, but better that they stay at home rather than play 30 mins or so and aggravate their injuries.

No point even debating the team now as it will be same as Boro expect Lamela in for Sissoko.

We need to field a strong side in this game, however rushing Dier, Dembele and Rose back my not be a great idea, especially Dembele. I also think Winks will be fine and actually will contribute well to the team and I would rather see him in the CM 2 than see a Dier Wanyama partnership and I think we will be better for us controlling the tempo than Alli playing in the CM2.

I would like to see:

Lloris
Walker Toby Verts Davies
Wanyama Winks
Lamela Eriksen Son
Janssen
Bench: Vorm, Wimmer, Dier, Dembele, Alli, Sissoko, GKN.
Since Dier, Dembele and Sissoko are injured still, I would put CCV, Onomah and Edwards on the bench in their place.

1) its only September.... Let's not worry about what we are going to be doing in March just yet.

2) Lamela's Cameo on Saturday could not have been that sapping of his strength and I'm sure he is more than capable of playing tomorrow for 60 odd mins and then be in good shape for Sunday.

3) I agree we have to rotate..... You're implying we haven't been when i feel we have so far.

This, for me, it's not the game to rotate too heavily in. Had we beaten Monaco game 1 its a different story but we didn't and now 3 away points from this tie is virtuality a necessity.

I've watched arsenal underestimate this kind of team in the CL year after year and they have suffered because of it. we cannot afford to do the same here.

Torn with the team selection here! Do we go to attack and toe to toe or play a bit more conservative.
With dembele and dier out our hand is being forced a little. In the cm2 we have winks or alli. If alli plays cm then playing conservatively is out the window imo.

Tough team selection in terms of balance in a tough away match.
