We play Monday remember, more chance of Jose playing a stronger team this game than any we were playing on the Sunday

with it being the first game and at home, I see him going fairly strong

I dont wanna see Winks and Hojbjerg on the same pitch, Winks goes as the deeper one and Hojbjerg loses everything that he does great when Winks is not there. Winks really needs to play as the 8, he is not a DM. Problem with that is that it leaves Hojbjerg as now our only DM, and he should really be rested, but we can’t afford that. So I don’t know what we’ll line up with. Something like this?:

Hart
Doherty Toby Sanchez Davies
Winks Sissoko
Bale Dele Moura
Vinícius
Which should still be strong enough.

Any news on Dier? Hope he can start this one.

I also wonder if Jose should start working with Dele and Lamela on becoming midfielders. Or at least, midfielders that can play in a midfield 3. I believe Lamela is very capable of doing this and could actually play to his strengths. We need more options in that space at the moment. As frankly, we only really have three midfielders worth a damn, PEH, NDombele and Lo Celso. Problem is, one can't play for more than 60 minutes and another can't seem to get fit. Leaving us with relying on Winks and Sissoko. Which can be hit and miss.

We have attacking options aplenty with Vincius, Kane, Sonny, Bale, Stevie B, and Moura.... and Clarke. We simply don't need Dele or Lamela in this space. So, why not try converting them? In Dele's case, that should be fairly easy, considering that's where he started his career.

In terms of this game, I'm going to assume Tanganga and Dier are out. So, maybe it is time for Jose to experiment with a 343.

Lloris

Toby
Dav
Davies

Doherty
Winks
Dele
Reguilon

Stevie B
Vincius
Moura

Subs: Lo Celso, N'Dombele, Bale, Kane, Aurier, Sissoko, PEH, Fagan-Walcott, Cirkin

All I know is that I don’t want Toby or Sanchez playing left centre back again. Neither can do it. They need to be rotating as the right centre back not playing together. With that being said, and considering we don’t play again till Monday I’d go with:

Lloris

Doherty
Alderweireld
Davies
Reguilon

Winks
Sissoko
Lo Celso

Bale
Vinicius
Bergwijn

Bench: Hart, Aurier, Sanchez, Cirkin, Højbjerg, Dele, Ndombele, Clarke, Kane, Son (more subs in Europa and home tie so might as well have a strong bench).

Honestly think Davies is a better option for LCB with Dier injured and Rodon ineligible. We have to play one of Ndombele or Lo Celso to have any control. I don’t like playing Winks and Sissoko together but Højbjerg can’t be overused and we don’t have other options to rotate. Massively frustrated Skipp isn’t here. Delighted he’s playing so well for Norwich and a full season in the Championship will do him the world of good but I think he’d have gotten a lot of minutes as Højbjerg’s competition/cover. Would definitely be a better option than Winks. And then finally that front 3 needs minutes. Bale needs time on the pitch to build up to his level. Bergwijn needs games to build his confidence. And Vinicius needs games to show is what he can do and feel part of the team.

Hart

Doherty Sanchez Tanganga Davies

Sissoko Winks Gedson

Bale Vinícius Dele

Subs : Gazza, Toby, Reguilon, PEH, Lamela, Bergwijn, Kane

in an ideal world, only Lamela and Bergwijn get used off the bench. But that wouldn’t be very spurs now would it

I think we can name 10 subs and use 5 of them. So for a home game the bench can be the first team players we hope to rest but could use if struggling. For away games they can stay at home.

Gedson isn’t registered for Europa and Tanganga isn’t fit unfortunately

Unless he is injured, Lamela should be the first name on the team sheet. If he had played against Hammers, we would not have drawn that game. I think a lot have under estimated his value to the team in terms of press, defending and not surrendering the ball due to his never die attitude.

Give the likes of Dier, Lamela, Lo Celso plenty of time to heal up.

However, I suspect Mourinho will play a stronger side than that.

Why are people putting Gedson in their teams? He's not in the squad for the group stages.

Jose will want to ideally win the 1st four games, so I expect him to go with a pretty strong side with maybe changes at FB, Winks instead of Sissoko, someone instead of SB (maybe CV) & the GK could be either Hart or Lloris (don't think HL is good enough to say he's definitely the No 1).

He was in training to today with the rest, my only thought is if we keep him fresh for our next PL game and start him on the bench, give Bale a start. I agree Lamela is important for us.
