I don't trust Poch all the time but I do when it comes to playing the big teams (Liverpool aside!)
I don't know what he says but he usually gets then really motivated whatever players he plays.
I think when we play the minnows we need to destroy them. With the bigger teams my inclination is to play more conservative but Poch seems to get the players to really have a go (as I said not the pool game)

Thing with the diamond though is that it can leave us vulnerable in wide areas, where City are most dangerous. Even if we did look better in it last week, I don't think it would be wise to use it against City anyway.

Didn't we switch from a diamond last season in the CL tie after conceding those 3 in the first half? And then play the following league game without the diamond?

Yeah I agree, I don't know how it's gonna work - when you set up defensively your midfield three are so narrow that the full backs aren't tracked, leaving them with acres of space on the wing, we saw that against Liverpool.

The only saving grace here is that he plays Sissoko and Ndombele as the wide pairing so they can get out to the respective full backs, I guess if we win the ball back quick enough we'll be dangerous in transition on the counter but other than that I'm not sure.

The diamond just won’t work against City or Pool. Even if Siss and ND have the legs to track out to the touchlines and shield the fullbacks all match, we will be massively exposed to KDB in CM and the quick switch of play.
4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 means that the width protection is more structured.
I genuinely thought the diamond died with that terrible England team of the early 00’s.
It just doesn’t function on any level in today’s game with three in midfield and attacking fullbacks.
And when in possession it leaves us so narrow. That average position pitch map from Villa had and six mid and front players int the width of the Centre circle.
And worse it also means Kane is in a front two. Which usually means he goes wandering.

The first goal they scored, Wanyama was the DM in the diamond, KDB dribbled straight at him from the right flank, while Aguerro cut in front of him. Wanyama momentarily went with Aguerro, which allowed KDB to get past Wanyama and go across the face of the box. This panicked our back 4 and created space for Sterling. We initially responded by dropping our midfielders down so KDB couldn't cut in like that.

So, I think it was a combo of tactics and personnel. Wanyama did not have much game time and is kind of crocked anyway, so he couldn't keep up with KDB and Aguerro in the same space (though to be fair, not many can).

Don't really care what the line-up will be. Just want a win against the moneybags.

Yeah I can’t see it being anything else but this. As long as Poch doesn’t do his usual and set up the team incorrectly from the start of the match then I think we could spring a surprise. There hasn’t been much between the teams in recent games. Son is a big miss though, you can tell their players are frightened of him.

The good thing is that Son will be back after this game. :)

I think we need to remember how well we played vs City in the league game towards the end of last season when if it wasn't for us being wayward in front of goal then we'd have probably beaten them or at least drawn. They ran out 1-0 winners but the clear cut chances were few and far between for them iirc.

I can't remember how we setup that day but we've played them enough times recently for me to have confidence in Poch getting it right system wise. No idea if it'll be enough to get a result but I'd argue it's better to play them now before they've really got going. I know they dicked West Ham on opening day but that's hardly anything to write home about.

Would take a draw but think we've got enough to get the win if we nail our gameplan.

IIRC it was three at the back
