Did I imagine it or did Ange say that Solanke would be fit in time for the Arsenal match.
So not sure he is going to be fit for the Toon.
Think this whole thing is a bit weird. For some reason the reporter asked him if he'd be back for the Arsenal game, and Ange said yes, and that he wasn't ruled out for the Newcastle game but they'd have to see.

Which then led to headlines that phrased it as will be back for Arsenal, or a doubt for Newcastle.

First proper test of where we are up to.

I hope Solanke makes it but I don't think he will.

He has to start Odobert and Kulu after last week's performance.

3 main selection questions;
- can Solanke play?
- do we need Sarr for this one?
- who makes way?

Keeper, back 4, Son all auto picks.
Hard to drop any of Biss, Deki and Madders.

So:
. ............ Vic
Porro Cuti vdv Udogie
............... Biss
Deki Sarr Maddison Odobert
................. Son

If we played a traditional flat back 4 and didn't invert our full backs for this one game it would completely destabilise their game plan, and we would win comfortably. With Isak, pulling into the space behind Porro again, we'll lose.
Against Everton Destiny and Porro were more measured, when one went forward the other held back, we switched play across the park a few times, with some dinked balls over the top also which is good signs mixing things up

This has bogey game written all over it. They’ve had a few disappointing results to start (given the lack of goals). When you pair hunger with the tactics that absolutely butchered us in our last time out against them, I’m going in with low expectations. With that said, I’m thinking that we are looking at:

Vicaro
Porro Cuti VDV Udogie
Bissouma
Maddison Bentacur
Deki Son/Solanke (if fit) Son/Odobert (if Solanke out)

I think Solanke paired with Deki on the wing actually makes up for the lack of speed with Deki since there is a ton of creativity and strength.

I feel quite adamant that Deki should start this. We absolutely need his ball retention and progression, work rate, and creativity. Brennan would be great in the last 20 in a match like this

It’ll be the same as last weeks bar injuries. Can only see Solanke coming off the bench replacing one of the front 5

I think you have to play your best team (incl. considering form) and not be too worried about the opposition (e.g., dont put Biss and Bents in there - keep Kulu in there centrally and cause THEM problems). As others have said, thats the same as Everton with the exception of Solanke (if fit) in for BJ.

Vicario

Porro
Romero
Van de Ven
Udogie

Bissouma
Bentancur
Kulusevski

Odobert
Solanke/Richarlison
Son

Think we need our most athletic, robust midfield that also has the best potential to retain possession and I think that’s it. Odobert’s pace and ball carrying as an outlet will be important. The rest picks itself.

Here’s the 2 x Newcastle starting 11’s so far this season in case it impacts how you think we should set up.

Only unforced change between the games was at LB where Howe may have allowed Lloyd Kelly a start v his former team but he was eventually subbed anyway so Imagine and expect to see Lewis Hall at LB.

The other change was of course Krafth for Schar due to suspension. He will still be suspended for our game. If they sign Marc Guéhi I could see them throwing him straight in (I really hope they don’t!)

Off the bench their biggest attacking threat is Harvey Barnes. Pace against tired legs late on is a potential worry. He has come on in both games after 60/70 mins once for Murphy once for Gordon. We have looked leggy late on in both games

Bentacur back out on the pitch anyway.

I did not spot Solanke but maybe somebody with better eyes than me will.

Huge game this. A win would be a massive boost given the context. We've got quite the little run of tough fixtures I have just now realised.

Such a tough one to predict, but for me I think there's 3 things to consider:

A) Who is fully fit
B) Who is in good form
C) Getting the right players for the game

For me that rules out Johnson on point B) and both Solanke and Richarlison on point A)

It's then a tough call for Sarr versus Bentancur, but I think Bentancur edges it on point C).

So the question then is how to get Deki and Maddison into the team, as frankly both are on form and the right types of players for this game, so tick all three boxes above.

So I would personally do what we tried a bit in pre season and deploy Deki as a false 9.

- Vicario -
- Porro - Romero - VDV - Udogie
- Bentancur - Bissouma -
- Madison -
- Odobert - Deki - Son -

Who is the guy with a mohawk in last second when Dragu drinks water? Is it someone in the staff or something?
