Werner is getting into those positioms though, and he's making things happen.

People will jump on the misses, but its clouding their judgement on how we're functioning as a team with him in it.

Same team that started at OT for me.
You could say the same about a shit goalkeeper though. "He's getting in the right areas" "He's trying to come for the crosses" while shipping bad goal after bad goal! At the end of the day the bloke is impacting the team with these misses as well as the fans and himself. Players might start to think twice about playing him in if they don't believe he is going to do anything useful with the ball or to save him from himself. What is he doing in training to improve his decision-making in these situations? He should be doing extra sessions and drilling and drilling to get back to the levels he himself has already reached. I watched his peak-Leipzig YouTube compilation and saw him slotting away one-on-ones like he was shelling peas. It's in him somewhere and he needs to bring it out and in my view until he is doing that consistently he shouldn't be starting games.

Please for once can we go in to an international break with 3 points. It seems like we always lose before one which sets the tone for an awful 2 weeks of SC and fretting about getting turned over by a shitty West Ham team in our next fixture.
I think the last time we won before an international break (not including last game of the season) was the burnley 5-2 in September 2023

Sonny unlikely to play according to Ange, but expects Udogie to play. I think Werner still starts, and could do damage against the Brighton high line. Too early to start Moore but he most definitely should get decent minutes

Vic

Porro Cuti VdV Udogie

Deki Roddy Maddison

Johnson Solanke Werner

Surely a simple case of you don't change a winning team. Exact same as OT, with Moore, Bissouma, Spence & maybe Dragusin playing a role in the second half.

2 starts, 2 wins.

Nobody on the team seems to be getting down on him, or refusing to pass the ball to him. I think his misses, while well documented, are overblown.

He also continues to have positive impacts on the squad and the game - off the top of my head, there was the cross to Lankshear, and then there was also a defensive performance when he tracked back into our box to make a sliding clearance.

Every player will have moments in games when they help, and moments when they wish they did better.

If the "fans" are impacted, well, that's on them, imo.

Yep, same team as against United. I know people will jump on Werner but it's a process & if you watch the post match press conference from last night it will illustrate Ange thoughts on the younger guys.
Moore will of course become a first team starter for us in time, but we cannot rush this. Werner worked really hard against United & put a couple of very very dangerous balls in. He also is currently our only player than runs beyond the front man. Johnson hasn't ever been that type as he hugs the byline a bit more and like to do the give & go more than just make that run.

Even though Werner is struggling horrendously infront of goal, he maintains as a threat for the opposition and they have to be very wary of his pace & runs. Moore is a different type of player, he isn't going to make that run and he is so much better with the ball at his feet facing up the opposition.

Really appreciate the Werner support in here, which I agree with. Yes, his finishing is dog shit, but...

Honestly, how many times do players, in general, get one on ones? Not that often. He gets them because he's sharp, intelligent and super quick.

Yes, we know he'll miss basically every chance he gets, but the aforementioned qualities, which in combination are quite rare, absolutely creates threats for opposition, and sooner or later he will score. In the meantime, he's definitely adding value to the side - a side that has got a habit now of winning - and he works very well with Deki in particular.

Same side as Utd. If he's struggling, sub him. But for now, if it ain't broke....

p.s. no one can question the guy's commitment or work rate - he deserves our support. Groans when someone misses are fair enough, it's reactionary. Getting on someone's back for being selected is absolutely not OK.

Nah, this is not even remotely sensible as a comparison.

One is not taking chances but we are still winning and he is still contributing, the other would literally be directly contributing to us losing because he's a keeper. Come on.

If Destiny is touch and go I'd rather give him the break to properly recover tbh. The last time we were on a good run of form and there was uncertainty about him being fit to start was the barrel of fun that was the first Chelsea match.

The arguments for Werner starting is honestly baffling. He could score 4/10 and many will still argue a case for him starting. Mikey Moore has earned the right. So what if he played Thursday? So did Porro and Cuti.

If it wasn't the international break I'd agree, but if he's fit I'd give him 60 minutes.

Dragusin, Spence and Gray should all be coming on though (if things are going well).

Werner is obviously having a crisis of confidence and we should expect him to be useless on the ball however that doesn't mean that he can't make runs and press which is an important part of playing well as a team. It's too early to be overloading Moore as well.

I wouldn't start Destiny. I would only consider him later in the game as a sub for Porro to which you can then shift Spence over to the right. Given the injuries to Odobert and Richarlison I would also leave Son out for this one, the last thing we need is another injury to a forward.

Vicario
Porro Romero VDV Spence
Bentancur
Maddison --- Kulu
Johnson ---------- Werner
Solanke

Forster, Dragusin, Udogie, Gray, Bissouma, Pape, Bergvall, Moore, Lankshear

I know I will get a lot of disagrees.

I understand the sentiment of wanting to see more of Moore but "Cuti and Porro, 2 of our most experienced players with probably 15 years of senior starts between them, played so let's chuck the 17 year old in who just played his first full 90 for the first team" doesn't make any sense as a comparison. I'm sure he'll be on the bench but I'll be absolutely amazed if he starts. I don't want Werner to start, I'd cancel his loan if we had adequate senior cover, but starting Moore days after his first full appearance isn't the answer.

I think we've seen stark reminders of that second paragraph this season. He's never where team-mates think he'll be when they pass to him and they're never where he passes the ball to. I can think of 2 or 3 examples just from his last couple of appearances where he's passed it to nobody in the box, either between players or behind players. It's either him that's wrong or it's all of them...

OK, that sounds fair enough. However, a keeper could still concede goals and we win the games as long as the winger could finish... ;)

Saw a tweet after the United game - sorry, can't find it now - that said Werner was part of the reason we won 3-0 and part of the reason we didn't win 6-0.

On balance I think that's a reasonable way to look at it.
